How can I get subtitles in a 3D MKV to show properly?
In a normal 2D MKV the subtitles work fine..

Hi,

this problem need to be solved for all BDPs ;-) (it's also present on my BDP9600).

Hey both,

I wonder if 3D mkv file can be played cuz I heard from Philips in another HTS post that only 3D disc playback is guaranteed, not other media files...

If that plays, it's a real big surprise for me :D:D:D

Hi,

if you have a MKV with Side-by-Side 3D content you can manual set your TV to 3D -> "Side by Side"...

And the problem is, that the SRT content isn't show correctly, since it is only correct if one do NOT switch to 3D.

Subtitles in 3D MKV is a bit of a hassle. When using regular subtitles in a 3D movie (i.e. SRT in a Half SBS) they're only shown on the left screen (or sometimes not at all). While wachting the movie in 3D the left and the right screen 'mix' together as 3D. The subtitles used are mixed also. Because the right screen doen't contain subtitles, the result in 3D is poor. The trick is you have to overlap the left/right or over/under frame on eachother to get readable subtitles in 3D. A far as I know this is not due to Philips hard- or software, but it's a general problem watching 3D MKV movies with afterwords added subtitles and is applicable to any device.

If you have got subtitles available (e.g. in SRT format), you should use a special program to insert them in your MKV container. 3DSubtitler is such a program and it's for free! What 3DSubtitler does is overlapping the left/right or over/under frames, using a subtitle source file (link http://84.27.10.123/3DSubtitler/). What I do not know is if the end result is viewable on your Philips device (I did not test it).

While at it, also some menus and icons (i.g. pause and play icon) show incorrect when watching 3D (MKV?) movies (at least on my 36PFL7606). Because some menus are shown correctly in 3D I therefore think this is a software problem which can be sorted out in a future firmware release (I hope).

I tested in that way but the result is a "blurry" unreadable sub.

I use a 3D SBS MKV (Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides 3D Trailer) with a Srt sub.
In the 3DSubtitler, I choose the vobsub idx/sub setting for the sub. = unreadable sub.
In the 3DSubtitler, I choose the blu-ray sup setting for the sub. = no display sub.

I tested with the idx/sub inserted in the mkv and separated files (*.mkv, *.idx, *.xml, *.sub), and I got the same result... Blurry subs. (with 3d activated and NOT activated)

In the PC all the subs are ok.

the problem on bdp5200/55 with vobsub idx/sub.

reading in the post of the programmer (3DSubtitler), he say:

the old idx/sub format is not much supported these days.

then, can we get support of idx/sub format in our philips?...

Hello,
I have the same problem except my subtitles don't appear in any way.
Tried both options on 3dSubtitler.

Hello,
When I put subtitles as external files it doesnt work.
When I put subtitles as streams on the mkb I get that blurry subtitles.

So, this blu ray does not support 3d subtitles?

Wait! wait! Don't throw it away and don't sell it. It's good.
Hello guys!
Once I solved my problem (mine is not a Philips, anyway) I could not help sharing the solution. You run bdsup2sub.jar (it should be in 3dsubtitler's folder), load the sub file, reduce resolution (set PAL 720x576), save and retry. Before running bdsup2sub you should have installed java (free for download) first.
Good luck.

Can you more explain it with configurations?

First make sure your player supports vobsub subtitles.
Then run 3dsubtitler following the instructions here (http://www.3dsbs.com/3d-subtitles/57-how-you-can-make-3d-subtitle.html). Bear in mind that the filename of sub/idx files must be the same as the movie's. Do playback in 3d mode with subs on. If subs look smudgy then you may have to edit them as follows:
Run bdsup2sub, click file and load the idx (or sub) file created with 3dsubtitler. Click settings, go to conversion settings and tick convert resolution PAL (720x576) if you live in a PAL country. Click ok. Click file, select save/export, give a filename and press save. Remember to rename files as appropriate before testing.
Cheers

No, you don't. You only need e.g. movie.mkv, movie.idx, movie.sub. Now if your subs look like the ones hellnano, member of this forum, has posted (see his attachment 606, earlier in this thread), then you try the trick with bdsup2sub I mentioned.

Hi buco,

If you watching via USB stick via your TV, then I advise you to ask this question in TV forum: http://www.supportforum.philips.com/en/forumdisplay.php?51-TV-Forum
