View Full Version : dedicated cinema 21/9 gold series thread.

Greetings all..

After trying to find as much info on the cinema series as possible in other threads I thought it would be
a good idea to start a dedicated one, just to eliminate the long search for newcomers.
That way one does'nt get dizzy reading all those product numbers anymore.
So..here it goes...

Few days ago I bought the 50 gold and used it as a monitor playing d.v.d and b.d vids only.
Picture quality is superb..being rid of the ever present black bars is even more superb.
Finally..I have what I wanted for years..payed 1600,- for it at a local store.
So far..I kept everything stock as it came right out of the box.
The screen performs well without any S.W update..this ofcource is only first impression ( few days ).
I've been lurking about those S.W updates debacle and decided it's best not to do anything >> YET <<
I see no point in internet usage because I have blistering fast other devices for that.
As I said I use the screen for whatching movies in a 21/9 aspect ratio as I always wanted.

But..I'm interested in >> WORKING << possibilities on this T.V as well.
That's why I ask all present owners of the gold series to post their experiences right here.
Hopefully..that way we can all help eachother to get the best out of the product.

Thanks for reading.

O.K..I had the first black screen playing a vid after about 80 minutes.
Playback just stopped but still audio coming through.
Starting things up by remote did'nt work.
I pulled the mains waited for couple of minutes.
Put on power again,press remote..phillips logo..everything works again..picture back.
Never seen this kind of behavior anywhere..on any screen in my life.
What can I do about it?
Is this fixed in any update?
Please let me know.

I am also the 'proud' owner of the Philips Cinema Gold 21:9 TV. The build (hardware) is superb, however the software is really shitty (current fw version 14.95). There have been 6 software / firmware updates since I purchased this tv 6 month ago and the various bugs have not been solved yet also with new firmware new bugs were introduced. Those bugs have been discussed many times in different threads here, here's a list again:

1) Crashes related to "Channel-updates" when watching tv, screen goes black
2) Crashes related to network connectivity (wrong boot order?)
3) Easylink problems like other devices not being properly added to tv menu, wrong tv menu items (muliple multi-view icons in menu)
4) incompatibility with other Philips Products (specifically the HTS8562/12, that makes the TV crash when the Easylink "Auto-standby" is turned on on the HTS side).
5) Multi-view screen shows the wrong text (bug introduced with fw. 14.91)
6) CI+ module problems: sometimes changing channel gives "Encrypted channel" message and screen stays black. Going to other channnel and back solves it.
7) PNM always on after putting the tv on from standby even if the setting is set to off

I kind of lost hope that the bugs will ever be solved. I mean come on Philips 6 months have passed! At this moment, I'd give a negative advice on buying a 2011 Philips TV until Philips can bring out a stable software for it's tv's.

Thanks Blue voice for your comment..

Yes..I know about the F.W being uhh..not very good.
However..since I had the screen turning off by itself prob several times with the stock F.W
just using the screen as a monitor playing vids coming from P.S.3 I figured updating to
the latest F.W was the thing to do after all.
So..I did..and guess what?
Everything is now working quite stable in the way I use it.
Though..I'm still exploring the new device and have'nt used most other possibilities yet.
You maybe right not recommending to buy the T.V in it's present F.W..S.W..state.
Personally..I could'nt resist that 21/9 format screen..and I'm willing to take all the rest
for granted..for the moment.
I think things WILL improve in time with Philly.
If not..I go and blow up the factory.

Hi, I am also an 21:9 Gold owner and the TV shows terrible ghosting/crosstalk effects. Unacceptable!
See sample pictures here: http://www.supportforum.philips.com/en/showthread.php?4876-50PFL7956K-%28Cinema-21-9-Gold%29-extreme-ghosting-crosstalk

I also have the Philips Cinema Gold and I experience no crosstalk at all. 3D viewing is an absolute delight on this TV. Crosstalk also depends on the source material. I see you've posted some screenshots from Sammy and the Secret passage, this movie is known to have some crosstalk now and then. It's the source material not the tv. Do you also experience crosstalk when you watch 3D Blurays like Avatar and Tron Legacy? Those are 2 of the best 3D movies on Bluray and I see no crosstalk at all. I also experienced that if you download 3D movies from the internet you could also see some crosstalk because of the conversion.

Now..after a few weeks playing the screen with only a PS3 connected I get black screen in the middle of playing a movie.
No reason for it..after a while I get picture back..restart.
Also..in faster scenes I have Embellishments on figures..moving on the screen.
Blurring the image sometimes almost beyond recognition.
I tested on my samsung 16/9 big screen and perfect motion.
I heard someone say..have I paid a lot of money for a piece of garbage?
I tend to think the same by now.
I've been reading lots of comments on this board about how disappointed people are about Philips support
to fix all those probs and giving no reply..every F.W update seems to make things worse.
I'm ashamed to be a Hollander because of it.
If it were not for that 21/9 screen format I would bring it back to the shop today.
Unfortunately..no one else in the world is making it.
I have 2 year warranty and I intend to USE it.

Vizio also makes 21:9 screens in 50" and 58" in the US, see: http://www.vizio.com/ces/cinemawide/overview

THX..Blue..for the info..I did'nt knew about that.
But..always BUT..look at the price they want for it.
Rediculous in my opinion.
For that kind of money I buy a high end projector far superior to any screen.
Maybe I should have done that in the first place.
To late now.
Seems I'm stuck with a high prised inferior device.

It depends if you are after picture size, or quality. In my opinion projectors are lacking in contrast...
