View Full Version : BDP3200/12 wrong AR in MKV playback

Player plays all MKV files but with the wrong aspect ratio/screen format!

Unsure if this an issue caused by the player or the TV (Sony Bravia)...?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I had to set the ratio of my TV (from LG actually) to "just scan" and everything's fine.

I'm not sure about what setting will be the equivalent on a Sony, but I'll give it a try later today. Thanks.

I was just about to post this myself.
I have just bought a bdp3282/05 and I am having the same problem.
All my 720p MKV disks play in 4:3 format. I have changed the settings on my TV (samsung) and it does not make any difference.

There is no firmware update to solve this problem.

Philips can you sort this out?

I tried changing my TV's screen settings last night. It didn't help...
How have you configured your players HDMI output (setup)?

Hmm... It seems that movies in 21:9 format, which should have black bars on top/bottom or cropped left/right get squeezed into the 16:9 format. The result is unwatchable.

Always feared that this was down to poor firmware support (got a Sony DVD/HDD which is unable to play XviD video in correct AR. Sony never fixed the issue).

I am going to try different formats over the weekend. Im going to convert mkv to mp4 to see if this is just an mkv issue.
the format on the information screen clearly says 1280x720.

My old (broken) blu ray which was a samsung played these files fine. I just hope that phillips can help out with a new firmware. Im happy to provide them with disks that are causing problems! They are home movies that I have taken from my HD camcorder which has a maximum resolution of 720p

Ok I am certain this is an mkv file issue.
Ive just recoded 2 different MKV 720p files that when played on my bdp3282 woul plau with the wrong AR.
Ive recoded them into mp4 HD again in 720p and they play fine.

Any word that you are looking at this phillips? As I said before I am happy to send the files that seem to have the wrong AR when played on the BDP.
Thanks

you should upload somewhere a test file. So, Philips can make tests.

from experience, you can upload the file to www.wetransfer.com, what i suggest is to put yourself as sender and receiver. it will then gives you a short URL...

you can then send the short URL to "Philips - Remko" by PM.

that s the way we usually do...

That's even worse than what I've experienced. Obviously, that video - from HDTV source - should playback in full screen (ie. ws 16:9).

Any chance you could upload a sample, as suggested above?

Hi,

with the latest version of MediaInfo I found out, that some videos have two information for aspect ratio:

Display aspect ratio: 16:9
Original display aspect ratio: 3:2

or

Display aspect ratio: 2.35:1
Original display aspect ratio: 16:9

In these case, the 2nd one (original display...) was chosen by a player and the aspect ratio was wrong.

Maybe you can check that again with the latest version of MediaInfo.

Thanks. But the fact that the "Tim & Struppi" file plays without black borders (top and bottom) tells me it is not showing in correct AR, as the movie is 21:7 and the TV used 16:7. Unless zoomed in a 21:7 movie on a 16:7 screen should play with borders. Correct me if I'm wrong. The way it is shown the image is stretched out vertically.

Dear users,

I have tested all the files sent. All works fine for my BDP3200 and all are in correct aspect ratio.
Please see below screenshot:

954

MKV file:
955

MP4 file:
956

Tim & Struppi file:
957

I will compile the input here and will forward the issue to our development team for more study. Please bear with us for some time on this.

Thanks & regards,
Philips Moderation Team

It looks like there are some issues with different models in the range. The BDP3200 is correctly playing files that the BDP3282 can not. Is the firmware the same? If not can the BDP3200 be adapted?
Thanks again for your help!

Actually my player is the BDP3200x/78 (BDP3200M2) and is also not playing correctly, just like yours. 16:9 squeezed like a 4:3.

I'd like to chime in: After getting a BDP5200 yesterday and testing the playback capabilities, I was pretty miffed that the AR of some MKV files was wrong (both via USB and DLNA).

The problem is this: If the black bars were cropped off before encoding, the file only has a height of e.g. 800 (instead of 1080) or 500 (instead of 720) pixels. The picture is then stretched by the player to the full 1080 or 720 pixels, depending on the file, when playback in 1080p is done.

The correct behavior should be to stretch the width to the correct amount (depending on settings) and proportionally (!) scale the height, or vice versa.

Since this problem exists in the 3000 and 5000 models, I guess it's a general problem in playback.

Hopefully we can get a fix??

Happy easter!

Any news?? I keep seeing new users at the brazilian BDP3200 forum complaining about the same AR problem. 16:9 videos squeezing in the center of the screen like a 4:3.

Hi.. It's because they didn't confirm the same AR problem as mine on their BDP 3200 tested. How can they debug?

i'm having the same problems with my BDP3200/12 Blu Ray player for mkv clips having ratios: 2.35:1 or 2.4:1. the image on my Samsung A650 TV is narrowed on L and R, and i could not get the full screen 16:9. Waiting for your support

Dear all,

Just would like to give you some updates here: after sending over all the video clips provided to the development team, they could only reproduce the issue on one of those clips.

That's why I have asked crying2004 for help to upload us more files for testing. I will update you all the testing results later.

Are the development team using the exact models of player that we are saying have the problems?
If not could it be that we all have faulty players? Could we then. ask phillips to swap for non faulty players?
Thanks

Can you disclose exactly what issue/clip it was?
Will that and the other issue(s) be fixable via FW?

Thanks.

sorry, i can't. there are larger than 1.3 gb files. i've trimmed the files and i found out that the problem of pan&scan might be related to the dimension of the files. the trimmed files, having about 20 mb worked fine, at 16:9 ratio.

i hope that this info will be useful in finding the solution to our problems.

after trimming the files with SolveigMM AVI Trimmer + MKV the pan&scan and narrowed screen problem are gone. Please investigate what's behind the trimming software (what is actually doing through the process it runs for trimming) and adapt it to the Blu Ray software so the files could play without any problems all .mkv files.

Thank you!

Dear all,

Thanks a lot for helping!
The video clip that the development team can reproduced the issue is the one uploaded by pau1777 (with a mp4 file and mkv file).

We are still testing this with more files on BDP3200/ BDP3280. Will let you know more when we have more info from the development team. Thanks.

I'm a little confused...
Does that mean that "my" problem, exemplified by the file I uploaded to show the AR bug (Tim & Struppi - stretched and shown without black bars on BDP9600/12) cannot be reproduced?
It was clearly visible in the screen shots you posted earlier...

which model you are using? BDP3200, BDP3200X or BDP3200M2?
It's originally a 21:9 movie?

hi there,
it's not your problem, but they may think this is the only one video clip that's of a problem. are you having the same issue with the rest of your 21:9 video? or this is just an adhoc one?

I do not understand what you're saying. But if you read the thread you'll see there are at least 2 different bugs being discussed. The one affecting me is 21:9 format video showing (stretched) in 16:9 format. And yes, this is all the 21:9 video I try to play.

Philips - QK
04-17-2012, 09:59 AM
Dear MidnightManic,

Yes, kwinnie is correct here. She means that the development team suspected that this "21:9 stretched to 16:9 issue" only happens to this Tim and Struppi file and not to the rest. Hence, is an issue of this video clip. But you confirmed that you have issues with all the 21:9 movies, then this is indeed something we have to look into.

Apologies for asking this over and over again- but could you take us another screenshot on a video clip other than the Tim and Struppi?

Mnay thanks,

Dear Crying2004,

We could not reproduce your issue in our BDP3200/12 with the files you have sent. Not sure if it is because those are the trimmed files. If the original files are with issues and the trimmed files aren't, could you help sending us the media info of the 1) original file and 2) the trimmed file so that we can look into it in greater details.

Thanks a lot for your help. For just a quick comparison, the main differences lie in "writing library" and "default". For the "default", we are not sure what that means.

We will try look into this further.

Kind regards,

Which "TV Format" is your player set to? A friend of mine discovered on his 5200 that you need to select "16:9" and NOT "16:9 (Widescreen)". With the format set to "16:9" the widescreen MKVs display correctly on my 5200, too. Maybe this also works for the 3xxx.

Ive tried all possible combinations of TV format on both the blu ray and my TV, nothing helps on this model.

I hope so too. On my BDP3406 this problem also exists. I'm not as annoyed as I could be since my Samsung TV's built in media player plays the mkv files perfectly, but it just shows up the problem with Philips that they can't get it right.

Hi kalkku123,

What kind of problems are you having? I'm asking that because we are discussing two different problems here.

1# - 16:9 format video showing in 4:3 format (the image is squeezed on the center of the screen)

2# - 21:9 format video showing in 16:9 format. (the image is stretched two eliminate the black bars at the top and bottom.

rodrigo, there are several problems not only the one mentioned by you that i've mentioned in my posts, detailed.

Beside 16:9 videos, there are problems with 2.40:1 and 2.35:1 videos.

Hi All,

Yesterday I posted the new release notes for the BDP3200, version V1.73
http://www.supportforum.philips.com/en/showthread.php?5807-BDP3200-Latest-Firmware-upgrade-(V-1-73)-has-been-released

With this new firmware does the issue persist?

Thanks for your feedback

YES, it has the same problems with 16:9 videos. I've installed the version 2.33 on Monday 07.05.2012.
i'll get back with info when i'll try a 2.35:1 video file or 2.4:1 video file.

Just giving my feedback.

I updated my firmware to 2.33 about now and i still have the same 16:9 problem. Squeezed in the center of the screen like a 4:3.

Tried 16:9, 16:9 widescreen (BDP menu options).

Hi,

during testing - be sure that your TV is setup to "unscaled". Only when the TV does not change anything you can test the BDP only.

tried every possible settings already with the tv and with the player. it has the issues above mentioned and they're not fixable through the settings.

Please help verifying if the new firmware solves your issue*. If not, please report here in the forum.

Since there are so many models and stroke versions involved in this issue, in case we have not release a firmware to address the issue of your player, please also let us know. (At present, we are checking that for BDP3282. Will update the status later on this)

With thanks & regards,

Didn't solve my issue - BDP3200/12 wrong AR in MKV playback. Vertically stretched image without black borders. Still the same. Guess it must be a problem with some of the files.

Btw the player did not locate the update via network! Had to use USB.

i'd say vertically stretched in your case.

My case was horizontally squeezed 16:9 showing as 4:3 (SOLVED with the last FW)

You're right, of course. Thanks. Fixed post.

Since I created this topic the issue has already been described in deatils. FW update didn't fix it. I'm still not sure whether it's down to the files in question or the player. Some files play just fine.

I have been having the same playback issues. I have tried to update my firmware with the new release but am getting a message on the unit saying "software failed authorisation, please insert correct software".
My BDP-3200/79 serial number starts with KX1A. Is this update not compatible with my player?

I updated the firmware of my player BDP3200x/78 with the latest version available. Now he is with version 1.73. However, my player still with the problem of aspect ratio of movies in mkv files as Philips only implemented this fix in the 2:38 version of the System Software. Why this correction was not made in version 1.73?

System software version 2:38
"Fixed the issue MKV aspect ratio - 4:3 / 16:9 would Normally display."
