View Full Version : Photo's on WD My Book Live with Twonky media server show as thumbnail on TV

04-18-2012, 12:04 PM
Dear Forum,

My photo's all in .jpg stored on my WD My Book Live NAS with Twonky media streamer show as very small thumbnail in the center of the TV (46PFL8606). Music and Video are streaming well.

In one of the closed topics with similar problem Thomas replied with:
Pictures (no matter the File Type) will be send as JPG to the TV. However, this sometimes Ends up in small Pictures.
Please go to the Twonky Configuration and make sure that Transcoding is disabled.
(afaik, this Option is enabled by default)

but there is no possibility to disable Transcoding in the MyBookLive or Twonky UI. Anyone knows how to fix this?

Kind regards,

Hi Iba, try to open your WD on a PC, and check the file type here. Let's double check if it's supported. http://imagicon.info/cat/12-19/vbsmile.png

On my PC I can see the jpeg's in fullsize, just the TV show pictures like thumbnails

Hi Guga and Fridge, thanks for your reply. File type is .jpg. I can open all photo's in full resolution, both on a PC with Windows 7 and a PC with XP.

In the mean time I tried it with my BD player (BDP7600) and it works as well; the photo's show in full resolution on the TV via the HDMI! So if the TV engineers just listen to their colleagues of the Blue Ray players, the problem can be fixed.

Looking forward to the FW upgrade for my TV.

sorry to see that you don't have a possibility to change the option i suggested on your NAS.
But its not a problem of the TV, it is how the TV is recognized on the NAS Server!
Install Twonky on your PC, check there for the Options i mentioned and stream the Pictures, you will see, it works.

I've experienced the same problem with PFL6606 and wdc mybooklive device.
Anyway I've just solved this issue. Actually, I didn't found how to disable transcoding (there is no this option provided with MyBookLive's Twonky web interface). The way I used requires some linux skills.
One can enable ssh access to MyBookLive device and travel to /usr/local/twonkymedia-5/cgi-bin folder with some ssh client. There are 3 files: convert-jpeg.desc, jpeg-scale.desc and thumb-jpeg.desc, which imho describes the conversion of any image format to jpeg and scaling them. I have renamed them to *.old, so there is no conversion and scaling rules for images now.
After renaming and restarting the twonky I can see my photos in full resolution (actually, full-screen) on TV.
This way is little bit dangerous, because when using ssh to access NAS device, the root access to the system is provided, so the system can be easily broken by some incorrect commands.

It seems to me, that this is most likely TV problem - may be it can't properly tell the server what size of picture it can show, or something like this?? The size TV showed the photos is something like 160 pixels in width. This is default size of thumbnails, defined in thumb-jpeg.desc.

Hi there, I found a way See the original picture . You have to update the twonky Server on mybooklive. To try The New Server you can use the trial of that
If you interested, i'll send you a Link to a tutorial which describes the update process.

Hi FridgesS3,
thanks for replying to the issue still; to be honest I gave already up. The software upgrade of the MyBookLive doesn't upgrade the Twonky Server (I think WD doesn't want to pay the license fee :) However, if you now have a solution to still get that done, please send me the link.
Kind regards,

Hi Iba,

I used this link:

This guide describe each step really good, the only thing is, that you have to purchase a twonky licence after the trial of 30 days, but it costs just 15 EUR.

Be care that you follow the steps 11-13 to have the new twonky server at each startup. The guide let you now, howto go back to the old version.

let me now, if you were successful.

best wishes
