Hi

Over the weekend, I watched a few Blu-rays on 9700. The feeling is just not right when compared to 9600. 9600 gave me crisp, pleasant and natural looking pictures and a well balance between dark and bright areas. 9700 on the other hand gives reddish picture and dark shades look muddy and losing details.

In order to figure out what's the issue on 9700, I tried changing a couple of settings both on 9700 and my TV. Couldn't find a decisive factor until I changed the brightness on 9700's Video > Personal setting. I changed the brightness from default 0 to 8. Now the dark shades look much more pleasant. I can also see more detail in dark areas.

Then I played around by pausing the video (on a scene mixed with dark and bright areas) and switched between all the default settings i.e. "No Optimization", "Internet video", "Documentary", "Animation", "Optimal" and compared against my "personal settings" with brightness=8. Seems to me the default brightness level in 9700 is way too dark.

Does anyone observe the same?

[update]
With a bit more test, 8 gives a little white cast over dark areas. I reduce to 5 to maintain a balance between good black level and detail in dark area.

My firmware is 3.80.

Hello,

I recently got the BDP9700 and noticed when playing dvds i got stripes through the text when subtitles are "fade"-in or out (see picture below).
This same behavior is with srolling text in menus but it isn't that annoying as with the subtitles.
I tried different video settings like; "no optimisation/optimal", "Deep colour off/on" running the latest FW (3.80) and did a factory reset but didn't help.

Anybody also experienced this and knows a fix?

Hi,
I'm very happy with the player. great sound, image quality is superb. but i see in MKV and blue Ray disk a small stutter once every minute.
it reminds me to the 24 frames stutter known by some media players.
it's hooked up to the panasonic vt20. (other BD players didn't show the problem on this set)

Also (minor issue) when I press the OK button on the Panasonic TV remote.... the player pauses.

Please try get rid of the "play" message when skipping through cd tracks.

Hi
Connected the BDP 9700 (lastest firmware) to my old Zanyo Z2 (1080i) with DVI and now I have purple picture. Sharp and flawless but all purple. composit works great.
I before used a BDP9600 (hdmi) without any problems. And also tried with an old samsung DVD player (hdmi) with perfect picture. ( and a bdp8000)

Inputs on the Z2 is:
input2 DVI and I can only choose RGB
input1: YpPbPr with 3 RCA connectors.

The purple picture problem is what I understand a HDCP handshaking problem. YpPbPr vs RGB
I do wonder why there was no problem with the 9600 or the 8000 series ?

Is there any other settings in the BDP9700 that makes it send the same signal as BDP9600 ?

Hi to all (owners and/or Philips support personnel),

Now I'm starting a new thread and hopefully someone will answer my question here.

I plan to buy a 9700 but kinda hesitate since I'm seeing so many issues related to SACD playing (especially with x.1 surround setups and with digital TV connection). I'm especially interested in playing SACD/CD on 9700 with a stereo setup: analog stereo L/R outputs (RCA) to amplifier; and analog TV to composite video output (RCA) (for unit setup and tracks monitoring and/or selection, as I don't know how much information the front panel gives). If I'm not mistaken, 9700 uses 24/192KHz DACs, so by design, I should hear PCM sound on the analog stereo outputs. Regardless of the problem of interrupted SACD playing with digital TV turning on or off (with firmware < 3.76), will I hear high quality full spectrum PCM stereo sound uninterrupted (all other channels downmixed to analog stereo L/R) when I play SACD/CD? There are no delta/sigma DACs, so I wouldn't be hearing DSD sound on analog stereo outputs, right?

Anyone knows what the differences among 9700/12, 9700/93 and 9700/98 are. Are they circuit board revisions or are they country specific? I'd noticed on some demo units, there's a jumper on the circuit board while there's none on others. If those numbers are board revs., I should avoid buying other numbers as I won't have chance to upgrade the firmware.

I hope someone will give me some idea before I go ahead and buy this product.

Thanks.
KTL
