40PFL6606H/12 - USB subtitles

Hello all,

My 40PFL6606 supports .SRT subtitles from USB, but they are ugly and small as hell, and aligned to the left. Most of the time, I connect a laptop through HDMI to be able to see normal subtitles.

I would surely want to be a bit bigger, in another font and center-aligned. Anyone else with comments on this matter?

Philips (Mark or Thomas), can we place a request to change the appearence of the USB subtitles as presented at the moment?

I will add to this post, a screenshot of current state and how I think subtitles should look - nothing too fancy but minimum watchable. This will make the USB subs feature MUCH more usable.

Please try to change the subtitle rendering to look at least close to those shown by KMPlayer or VLC.

I would say that the subtitle shows normal. I guess that will depend on the .srt file you have. I am not sure if you can edit this file to make the fonts bigger. http://imagicon.info/cat/12-19/icon_e_smile.gif

No, .SRT files have no information on font name and/or size. It can be changes only in the system (in the firmware). And these are really too small and use a font not good to the eyes.

Another bug, when longer subtitles should appear - they appear in 3-4 lines, covering half the screen of the TV. The maximum width of the subtitles should be bigger, or maybe at 80-90% of the available TV screen width.

Thomas, Mark - please forward this info to the developers and provide some feedback on the issue.

Would recommend you to buy some small, cheap MMC like Asus OPlay, Xtreamer, WD TV Live etc. Philips/TVP will not add such feature you propose. I bet this is not gonna happen even for 2012 TVs.

TVs/BR players in general does have less features that any MMC. I do not play avi/mkv on my TV anymore since it's useless. I do use my BR player and even this is not great. MMC is much better option.

I am not asking for any feature. Just for Philips to correct the DEFAULT VIEW of the .SRT subtitles:

1. Change font, needs to be more eye friendly;
2. Bigger size, at least one point;
3. Centered subs, not left aligned;
4. Larger subtitle margins to the left and to the right - so longer subs can appear in 2 lines instead of 3 or 4.

I don't see any problems in implementation with this request as it is not a new feature request. It is just a matter of will from Philips.

Quite imagine that you are pissed off but who decides what font is more friendly? What size is ideal? Why centered subs?

They would have to rework this part of firmware significantly ... and they will not do it since all is about money.

I am not pissed at all, the subtitles work. I am just suggesting changes that will make this feature be more usefull, which is one goal for these forums. To answer your questions:

1. Philips decides, of course. But, screens show that the font is hard to read and should be changed to another with higher & wider characters.
2. Ideal size is the one that is easily readable with plain eyes from 4 meters (for 40" TV sets).
3. Centered because is the common view of subtitles in ANY software/hardware player, and cinemas too.

I don't agree this needs significant rework of the firmware, as I know a bit of code.

Money is at the core of every business, and money comes from customers. Your point?

For sure, I would like some feedback from Philips if these corrections are possible or not, will be taken into cosideration or not.

Ah OK, good to know Benedickte. Is it at least reasonable? Or a lot of hard coding is necessary?
