I have a Philips TV (PHILIPS 37PFL7662D/05) and have just bought a Philips Immersive Sound Home Theatre system (HTS5543/12). I’ve connected the two with an HDMI cable, but I still cannot get the TV sound to play through the speakers. Can anyone help?

that will only work, if both devices have HDMI-ARC (audio return channel)... I think, your TV does not support audio output via HDMI (HDMI-ARC). You need to output the sound via another connector (e.g. SPDIF or analog out of your TV to your HTS).
