All I can imagine is, that the pause signal defined in the hdmi protocol is different for dvds and for blurays....

I think so... As far as I know there is no other system than BD-J except maybe, if you would burn your own blurays. But I don't own a bd burner so I cannot test this

You are right. Currently this is the best workaround if you wanna have all channels decoded to an analog signal. Much better than sending a stereo down mix to the tv and decode it again to a surround...
