You should be able to use any UnPnP USB keyboard and mouse with your TV. The level of compatibility may vary between the various apps, as not all support keyboard use.
Does the SSD have it's own power supply? If it requires more than 500mA (very likely) then the TV cannot supply enough power through USB alone, which could be the issue.
