What is your 3D setup and how well does it work?

Since quite a few people complain about too much Ghosting / X Talk in 3D, I was wondering if some differences in the setup would make for a better 3D performance, or if everybody has the same problems.
A possible way to determine how well your tv performs in 3D is to use the following side by side test video here:

If you load this movie (for example by streaming it to the ps3) and pause it, you should see some numbers for the left and some for the right eye. If you close the left eye and leave the right one open: the better you can see the numbers intended for the left eye (above) the more crosstalk you have.
I would appreciate it, if other people could also try to give a description of their situation when watching 3D content.



My setup:

My TV: 40PFL9705
3D device: Playstation 3, connected over hdmi 1.3 cable on hdmi side port.

Blu-ray How to train your dragon: Very visible crosstalk pretty much everywhere.
Ice Age 3 3D, side by side .ts file: Worked a bit better, except in high contrast situations.
Gran Turismo 5: Acceptable during the races, but Horrible crosstalk everywhere else, especially when some drivers are visible in the intro etc. The blue line on the ground also suffers badly from crosstalk. Gets even worse if the 3D effects is increased in the game settings.
Other 3D games and movies: Usually depends a bit on the contrast, but crosstalk is always very visible.
3D TV channels: not available here.

Crosstalk test movie:
Left eye open/right closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 1
Left eye open/right closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 12
Right eye open/left closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 12
Right eye open/left closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 1

If I look closely I can even make out all the numbers down to number 1 for the wrong eye easily. It also depends on the "smart picture" setting, I usually have it on "game".

My TV:- 46PFL9705 WITH Software issue 0.140.32.0 .

Am using a Philips BDP7500B2/05 Blu-Ray player.

Here goes (might be a long post), I also was not impressed with the amount of X-Talk or Ghosting on this "Flagship" TV, but it is not consistent, let me try to explain using Sharks 3D as an example:-

Try to think of the 3D effect as 4 layers. LAYER1, is the NEAREST to you (The Viewer) and this is the layer that gives the impression that the shark is floating between you and the tv screen. LAYER 2, is the shark close up but on the TV screen. LAYER 3 is the shark in the middle distance, (Between Layer 2 and Layer 4). LAYER4 is the background or furthest away.

Using this LAYER discription I have found the following appears the same accross all my 3D Blu-Rays( apart from 1):-

LAYER 1 :- BAD X-TALK or GHOSTING
LAYER 2 :- NO X-Talk or Ghosting
LAYER 3 :- NO X-Talk or Ghosting
LAYER 4 :- MINOR X-Talk or Ghosting ( Hardly noticable in fact)

This only applies to the FILM Titles that I have , the one ANIMATED title that I have just bought ( Off e-bay) ICE AGE 3,
only has the MINOR X-Talk in LAYER 4 and this has restored my faith in 3D.

I have spoken to Philips about this and all they could suggest is that I book the TV in for "Service" which I will be doing next week ( Possibly a pannel change or pannel firmware upgrade might be going to happen)

A technician is also coming out to check my 3D this Wednesday (30/03/2011) before taking the TV for repair (Philips probably think I'm lying about the problem OR possibly think I'm too fussy).

I too recently purchased the 40" 9705. It suffers from quite bad crosstalk from all sources I have tried, xbox black ops, ps3 GT5 and 3d blu ray movies via PS3.

I agree with the point that for movies the outermost layer suffers ridiculous crosstalk. When the opening titles come up on Piranha 3d it looks like I don't even have my glasses on, it is 'ok' during scenes where there is less depth in the 3d.

What week production number are your sets? Denoted by the first part of the serial number 10XX. Mine is 1037, week 37, and I hear that the 3d issue is corrected on panels after week 40...however some of these later sets have an alleged poorer 2d image.

Mine is currently with the engineer, it also had the loud audible buzz problem which is a fault recognized by philips.

I think we should work together on this as it isn't right to be sold a 3d tv that is not fit for purpose.

UPDATE:-

Technician/Engineer called today and confirmed the problem with 3D X-Talk or Ghosting. Didn't take the TV back though, he will report his findings back to Philips.

My origional 40PFL9705 (Week 34) was replaced by Philips because of the buzz and horrendus 3D X-Talk, with my current 46PFL9705 (Week 48) and the 2D picture quality does seem to be poorer BUT I am obviously not comparing "Like for Like" and working from memory.

That doesnt sound good. They must have great confidence (sarcasm) in this set if they would rather offer a refund than fix it. If they can't give you a working 2010 model then I'd push for a 2011 model, although you may have 6 months wait if it's anything like last year.

I do intend to get a 2011 model, even if I have to purchase one myself using the refund, I only hope to at least persuade Philips to let me hang on to my current set untill the 2011 models are rolled out in the uk (But I must admit a direct swap would be the perfect solution)

I did the test two times. One when my screen was room-temperature and the other wher I heated the screen up to about 30-35 degrees.

Cold screen (my contrast is 100):
Left eye open/right closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 1
Left eye open/right closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 9
Right eye open/left closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 9
Right eye open/left closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 1

Warm screen (30-35 degrees, contrast also 100):
Crosstalk test movie:
Left eye open/right closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 1
Left eye open/right closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 80
Right eye open/left closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 80
Right eye open/left closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 1

Well, major difference when temperature is higher.
Although too high isn't good either, the white numbers then turn too black.
(tiny bit blacker than background and then you notice).

At the right temperature I only saw one half of the screen, even the colored text was gone .

Hello , I have an 8605 3d ready I bought last year and just now was trying the 3d , I want to see if it works fine or I have some problem so I downloaded the video and loaded with the ps3 , useless to say it didnt load so I downloaded a free app and reconverted to mp4 , then loaded the video and a list of numbers appeared , I set the side to side 3d setting and I can always see the numbers just slight darker one and slight darker the other , if I set to cinema , they tend to disappear the first numbers also if I decrease luminosity , in equal measure , it doesn't seem to be like right eye different from the left I mean with left I see a certain degree of the left sequence and darker the right and viceversa in same way ... do I have a problem ? shoudl the whole set of numbers be invisible? or is ok if the first numbers only get invisible?

Ok I have made severall tests I made also a almoust 50 balanced settings , in severall stuff , I took off the perfect contrast and I saw made a significant difference turnng on light sensor ....
then I set the image setting to standard , and the following are the results

Warm screen :
Crosstalk test movie:
Left eye open/right closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 27
Left eye open/right closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 60
Right eye open/left closed -> top half screen smaller visible number -> 60
Right eye open/left closed -> bottom half screen smaller visible number -> 27

now I must say I am slight miopy on left eye anyway , this is for a fully readable number , but I still saw slight number image gray slight brighter than the dark and this I classify as barely seable , I cant read the number but I can write after I open also the other eye and the 60 become a 47 ...

so does my tv has a problem?

The weird thing is that after all this fixing when I started watching ocean wonderland 3d the image was awfull and I jus thad to switch to normal and scrap all the fixing I did .... anyway ghosting was present often ....
