Some 2.5'' HDD need 700 mah to power them and the normal USB port gives only 500 mah. Just check on the HDD sticker. I had one 250GB Hitachi HDD that needed 700 mah , it worked most of the time buy sometimes the TV cannot see it or , with power off, it makes strange mechanical noise . This never happened with a 500 GB Western Digital with 550 mah specification. But both are powered even if the TV is off. This I find useless... why keep it powered?

    Hi,

use a HDD with external Power Supply.
what Ibanas wrote is mostly correct.
2,5" HDD's need in 99% of the cases more then 500mAh.
The TV on the other Hand only gives out 500mAh.

To get more power, use an external Power Supply for the HDD or you can try to use a powered (Active) USB HUB which has its own power supply.

    Regards
    Thomas

2 more questions related to HDD, not to open another topic:

    1. I wanted to record TV shows and to watch mkv movies from the same HDD, and the TV tries to format the HDD to be used only for TV recording. Even making 2 partition did not help. If I connect 2 HDD,one for TV and one for movies , then it works. Is it possible maybe in the next firmwares to make the TV see the partitions of the HDD and to set which partition to use for recording ?
    2. Is it normal NOT to power off the USB ports when the TV is switched off ? The HDD is still running, you can sense it spinning or sometimes makes noises. What's the use of keeping this on?
