Experience thread - FW v000.064.018.000 (64.18) - for 8xx8 Series - 2013
Hi,
The new FW is live. For technical feedback (pos. and neg. points) please post here: ttp://www.supportforum.philips.com/en/showthread.php?11911-Technical-feedback-FW-v000-064-018-000-(64-18)-for-6-7-8-9xx8-series-2013&p=55532#post55532.This thread is more for details and discussions.
IMPORTANT: After upgrading your TV, it is necessary to perform a "cold start". This means that, after the TV is running again (after the update), shut down the TV, wait 1 minute (till all components are shut down), and unplug the TV from the mains (pull power cord) for 2 minutes before starting again.
Changelog
- Solution about consistent behavior of the EXIT key.
- Homescreen adaptation for Germany. (Kabel/Antennen Fernsehen)
- Hebrew text disabled in Now en Next + 8 days EPG. (Mainly solved for Israel market)
- Improvement stability behavior when starting up from HDMI source.
- Live TXT subtitles from broadcast no longer shown during playback of a recording without
- BBC iPlayer, video and radio program is functioning again.
- Solution about sometimes no connection to Philips Smart TV portal during virgin installation.
Best regards,

I have the 46PFL8008 (before I had the 46PFL8606)
I installed the latest firmware 64.18
Functions that don't work as they should:
- 'hdmi-blacklevel detection' is not available in the menu picture when an HDMI source is on. This should be available accordingly to the manual of the tv + this was also available in the 46PFL8606 when an HDMI source was on.
- 'clear lcd' don't make any improvement setting it ON or OFF when perfect natural motion is OFF, you have to set perfect natural motion to at least MINIMUM for the clear lcd to work. This is not the way it should work, in the 46PFL8606 there is improvement when setting clear lcd from OFF to ON when perfect natural motion is OFF.
- light sensor don't work properly (I don't use this, but I tested it)
I think these things are Software related, and I hope Philips (TPvision) will investigate on this and fixing the Software.

Hey guys,
I have a problem with the ambilight. When I'm using a Philips BluRay Player as a HDMI-source for my 46PFL8008S/12 the ambilight flashes in the upper right corner of the TV. It occurs in about 2-3 times per minute and it does not depend on the content the Player is sending to the TV. Furthermore it doesn't depend on the source, the BluRay Player receives the content from (USB, BluRayDisc, ...). I've tested it already with two devices (BDP7600 and HTS9150).
Since an other user has already reported the same problem in Toengel's forum, I suppose that it's a (firmware-) problem of all 8008 series.
Please help!

I'm kind of worried about Bert's remark regarding Clear LCD.
I was under the impression that the last few years, Philips TV models allowed Clear LCD to be on while Natural Motion is off.
My current TV (40PFL9704H) does not allow this and needs HDNM to be on before Clear LCD can be turned on.
I don't really like HDNM because it gives movies an unnatural "soap opera" look, but I would like to be able to use Clear LCD to have some form of motion compensation.

Hey all,
I own a 46PFL8008 and I have the following problems which are in my opinion related to software:
- While playing an mkv file from USB one of the top right ambilight leds is blinking en mostly green, sometimes red color. This occurs like 3 times a minute. Looks like the same problem 'Fitness-boy' is talking about.
- Light sensor does not seem to work. Nothing happens in turning it on/off. While in total dark the tv still shows a very bright image.
I hope Philips will respond to all these issues as these really do affect the way of experiencing your TV.
Thanks!
edit: 04-06-13, I did some tests with more mkv's, seems that the led blinking does only occur with some of my mkv's (and maybe other files). I still don't know what's causing the problem, could be sound codec, some other codec in the files?
edit: 24-06-13, it seems that the problem does occur with all played mkvs, sorry for earlier edit (04-06)Last edited by markvanoirschot; 06-23-2013 at 11:38 PM. Reason: more info

Issues so far:
- Dynamic Backlight: "best picture" mode too much dims TV backlight with dark images. Picture brightness is so low you can barely see details (for instance, try to watch "Harry Potter 7 part 1" movie in this mode...).
My TV backlight contrast (55PFL8008k) is set to 42 (ISF day) or 28 (ISF night) with "best picture" mode and light sensor activated.
- Dynamic Backlight + light sensor: light sensor does not work when Dynamic Backlight is set to "best picture" (or its effect is barely visible). Sensor works fine with "Standard" or "Off" backlight modes (not tested in "Eco" mode).
- Top right Ambilight LED is blinking in green or red. It happened only once with one movie: watching third StarWars blu-ray (PS3 through HDMI).
- Media Player (DLNA): crashing / freezing when moving too fast between folders / files (selection with arrow keys).
- "HDMI Black level" is missing from the TV options (as described in the TV manual)
Proposed improvements / missing functionalities:
- Dynamic backlight: in "best picture" mode, correct percentage of backlight dimming with darkest pictures to have a slightly brighter picture (limit lowest level).
Or of course, limit brightest level
= reduce backlight "range" between darkest and brightest pictures.
Light sensor to be used to determine best dimming percentage (on dark pictures only) adapted to room lighting condition (in addition to picture analysis, as currently done). Ie, in bright room, dimming percentage will be lower than in dark room (where the black level is more sensitive).
This would be different from / in addition to the current light sensor function which globally adapts TV backlight to room lighting condition (for dark and bright pictures).
- Picture style: allow automatic Picture style selection based on day hour and user preferences = Over 24h hours range, user could select prefered picture style, avoiding manual changes between day/night/etc modes.
For instance, user could define in the advanced picture menu: from 0 to 8h: ISF night mode is selected; from 8 to 20h: ISF day mode is selected; from 20h to 0 ISF night mode is selected.Last edited by FredFBe; 06-25-2013 at 08:03 PM. Reason: Correct and add missing info

Hi,
I've just purchased 46PFL8008S TV with FW v000.064.018.000 and have an issue with DVB-C tuner. When I add stations to favorites, they are getting doubled, tripled,.... after some time, which makes the Favorites list unusable. I'm not able to sort general list which makes it even more difficult to switch between stations.
Thanks,
Michal
Update: New channels are appearing in the NEW tab automatically even I did disable automatic channels update in Menu. Everytime new channels appear, my favorites get broken (doubled entries described before).Last edited by mitchhoris; 06-28-2013 at 11:03 AM.

Hi all,
Regarding the "Light Sensor not working" mentions:
The internal working of the light sensor is complex. The algorithm operates differently depending on image content, settings and adjustment of dynamic backlight.
The issue has been checked with special image content and the values are correctly interpreted by the algorithm.
In essence, the amount of light coming out of your picture is dependent on a couple of things:
- Setting of backlight contrast / video contrast (X in my overview)
- Setting of dyn. Backlight
- Setting of lightsensor off/on
- Dark/bright scenes.
See the image for more details.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation about light sensor use, it corresponds to our observations and even already to some of my above suggestions
Then another suggestion for improvement: in the "best picture" mode, it would be great to use the light sensor in the "bright scenes" as well, to adapt global picture setting to room lighting condition.
This would avoid :
- to manually switch from day/night picture styles (at least twice a day)
- over bright picture in dark room (if keeping day picture style)
- a huge backlight range difference, leading to either too bright or too dark scenes
However, its effect could be lowered in bright scenes (but present) compared to other dynamic backlight modes.
With this, I think the dynamic backlight system would be perfect
