    Unhappy Other Muse issues....SA4MUS08KF/12

I listen to music and podcasts for about 3 hours every day, so I need a player which plays music well.

This devices hardware is great, its got an excellent build quality, feels solid, well designed, the buttons click nicely, The sd card is hidden away behind a protective cover so there is no chance of accidental ejection. Has handy external volume controls. Uses a standard micro usb for charging. All in all the MP3 player plays music well, both flac and mp3s play and the quality is good.

From that point of view I am really happy with the device.

What was a real let down is the UI, its atrocious, how can a big company let something like this get to market? I would say that the UI is at the proof of concept stage, its not finished or polished, its performance is horrible. I have about 7GB of music on the device for testing purposes, most on an SD card. Everytime I turn the device on it takes over 35 seconds for the device to start up, I am use to other players where the startup time is longer when the file system has changed, files added or removed and the device has to re index, but the Philips does this everytime! Once started It takes another 10 seconds to populated music artist list so the best part of 50 seconds before you can be listening to anything. I do not know what would happen if the device was fully loaded with 40GB of songs....

I store my music by Artist/Album, the Muse has a File Browser option. This beats the Artist/song lists hands down for navigation and speed, I wish Philips had made the file browser the default method for accessing music/podcasts unfortunately its always three iffy-touches away from anywhere, and once you select a song it starts playing, you cannot backout of the song and get back to your file browser, backing out of a song always lands you back at the Artist/Album list, and not where you were either, most infuriating, you nearly always land back at the top of the Artist list! So I navigate to Bob Marley > and play a song from the Legend Album, if I now go back to the Artist/Album it takes back to Galliano??? There are various ways niggles like this show them selves but its generally not logical, and pretty rubbish really. There are other niggles with the UI. Like seemingly random albums not being listed alphabetically listed alphabetically.

When you turn the device on and eventually get to listen to music it does not remember where you were at the point you switched the device off, it normally just lands me at the Thelonious Monk Song, the reason for choosing that song everytime the Muse starts up I have not figured out the logic to, its no the first album or the last, I have 42 albums on the Muse for testing.

Generally I feel that the experience of the UI is shoddy, poorly executed with no attention to detail. That this would be released as a finished product is incredible, it does not even do the basics acceptably well. Its a shame because from a hardware point of view its a winner.

I hope Philips fixes these issues.

    Thanks Joanna,

Its just such a waste of effort for everyone involved, the hardware design and sound quality were excellent. I eventually took the Muse back to the shop, while there I had a play with the Ariaz, this had a more reliable/logical UI good hardware from what I could tell but no SD card slot .

    Good luck
