    Unhappy BDP9700 dvd subtitles stripes

    Hello,

I recently got the BDP9700 and noticed when playing dvds i got stripes through the text when subtitles are "fade"-in or out (see picture below).
This same behavior is with srolling text in menus but it isn't that annoying as with the subtitles.
I tried different video settings like; "no optimisation/optimal", "Deep colour off/on" running the latest FW (3.80) and did a factory reset but didn't help.

Anybody also experienced this and knows a fix?

PS my Samsung BD-ES 5000 and HTPC is not having this issue.

    Hello,

Thank you for the response, i just got the player for a couple days. I tried so far 10 different titles (genre, publisher), all with the same results.

Bluray seems not effected with the issue

    Hi. Cannot reproduce.
Can you explain for me what you mean with subtitles fade in and out. By standard they appear and dissapear without fading what I can se. Is there a setting for subtitles?
Please write step by step how to reproduce.

Hello Stormen, there is no fade option. It is there just before the subtitle disappears (i think its some kind op fade effect). But some times right after it appears.

In this video you can see it very clear (i hope so

    Hi,

I also tried it yesterday. I did not see these stripes.

However, DVD subtitles don't look good - they are more like a bulk of pixels ^^ It seems, that the BDP9700 insert first the subtitles into the video frame and then upscales the DVD stream to 1080...

    Dear Hisser,

Eyes not good- I cannot quite see stripes on the subtitles. But I agree that it's not in the best quality :P.

    Dear Toengel & Stormen,

Thanks a lot for helping check this out on your set!

    Dear Toengel,

For the ' bulk of pixel' you mentioned, do you mean something like that in the video from Hisser?
Do this happen to all disc you have tried?

*** Sorry that Hisser's post has fallen into the moderated post pool. Just have it approved.

    Hi,

I did not see these stripes when the subs are disappearing...

However, my subtitles look the same - you see the "pixel steps" at the letter borders. I miss some anti-aliasing. I only tested one DVD - I will check another one in the evening.

    Dear Toengel,

Thanks for your info. Yea, please let us know if you see the same on your other disc.

    Dear all,

If possible, anyone can take us a slightly longer video, that will be great! Meanwhile I will report the issue to the team here about this.

great video Hisser, Now I see it more clearly what you mean.
I used Gladiator for DVD sub testing ( everyone has it, everyone have seen it) :-)
I pushed the "pause button" and took it frame by frame forward, do you then have the same problem ?
I cant use hdmi at home right now, only composit on a old CRT tv, so that could also be a reason that I cant se the stripes.
BTW, Is your projector a DLP ?

This problem maybe only shows together with specific equipment ?
but anyhow, it doesnt show on blueray only on DVD subtitles/ srt

    Hi

I can reproduce the issue on a DVD with subtitle on. Strips are seen when the subtitles dissolve from 100% displayed to disappearance. My electricity supply is on 50Hz for the record. Not sure if it's observable on 60Hz electricity supply.

Also, I suspect it's 9700 adding special effect when handling the subtitle display for DVD (note DVD not Blu-ray). And the strips are observed when fully displayed to disappeared doesn't happen immediately i.e. between two successive frames. Please check.
