Overall I would say the start-up freezes have greatly improved/virtually disappeared with the last two firmwares, which is great.

BUT external subtitle support seems to have disappeared too! The lock-up/freeze issue is not limitied to text subs (srt) but also affects graphic subs (sub/idx). After the latest fw upgrade it is practically impossible to display subs.

Not sure if I can force it to load subs (via setup) since it seems it is switching them on that causes problems.

    Dear MidnightManiac,

I have passed the case to our quality team for study. They have tested MKV with .sub, .srt, .txt, .smi, .ssa on BDP5600 (with latest firmware), but we cannot find any hang up issues.

May I know if this case is 100% reproducible and if you can capture us a video demonstrating this behavior?

    With thanks & regards,

Yes, issue is permanent and affects both my devices. Also NOT limited to MKV - same thing happens to AVI containers.

As mentioned previously also not limitied to plain text subs, but also affects graphic subs (sub/idx).

Problem seems to have gotten worse after latest firmware upgrade.

I will try to record it.

    Dear MidnightManiac,

This player can play subtitle files in the following formats: .srt, .sub, .txt, .ssa, and .smi. Therefore, idx is not supported. On the other hand, could you send us your 'graphic subs' in .sub format for testing?

    Kind regards,

I've really never bothered with anything but SubRip text format. The other formats you mention are text based as well, I suppose?

All the Philips players I've owned have supported image-based subs (i.e. VobSub/IDX+SUB) subtitles, which are essentially just a re-package of the subs images from DVDs.

I'll test some more and send you the files you request.

Thanks for asking. No, it has not been resolved.

I haven't had time to look for, test and edit/upload specific files, but the device keep freezing and locking up.

I made a list of what seems to provoke the lock ups (see post #6).

    Dear MidnightManiac,

Since we cannot reproduce the issue, would it possible for you to send us samples of video clip/subtitle file for investigation?

I take it you refer to the subtitle toggle -> lock-up issue. I will try to send a sample clip/subtitle as soon as possible.

By the way, how about the other issues causing the same behavior?

Hello QK, its December, had another freeze today (5500).
When will the new FW be released?
    Regards.

For the hang up issue at start up, we can reproduce the issue and we will have a firmware fix for this. But since the firmware includes other benefits like Net TV improvements etc, we can only release it in around December tentatively. Hope you understand.

    Dear Midnightmaniac,

    Hi again :P
I have escalated this case to the team and the team said for BDP5600 we cannot reproduce the issue.
It can be that your device is faulty. May I know if this device comes with warranty to you (I know the background indeed, but I am not sure about the warranty)?

    Kind regards,

Since I bought the Philips BDP5600 on May 15th 2013 I've been forced to unplug the player from the wall about a dozen of times. So not too bad, even if a bit annoying.

One that happened several times is when it's starting, when the main menu appears there are a few of seconds where the player tries to read the inserted disc and autoplay. If I during these few seconds try to do anything else, like trying to go into the configuration or whatever, it will freeze. So one has to wait it out, let the disc play and then go back to the menu.

And then a few times it happened when I played videos from an USB stick, possibly related to fastforwarding and rewinding, not sure.

    True.

Some freezes can actually be avoided by simply waiting. I've had problems when toggling subtitles - either between different languages or simply on/off.

If you are able to refrain yourself from pushing buttons you can sometimes spare yourself another trip to the wall plug.

That being said, I still find the frequent freezes/crashes of this player unberarable. I hope they will be able to fix it somehow, but I'm beginning to doubt it...
