HTS3538/12 supported audio from hdmi arc and spdif

    Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Philips HTS3538/12 and connected it to my Sharp LC-60LE635E tv through the HDMI port.

Both devices support the HDMI ARC function, so I connected my computer to one of the other HDMI ports on the Sharp tv, with the purpose of using the ARC function to get the audio to the HTS.

The ARC connection is working (I can turn the volume up, down, power down the HTS using the tv remote), but my problem is that not all movie audio formats can play through this connection. I can play LPCM and AAC encoded movies but not Dolby Digital (AC3).

I don't know if the problem is in the computer, the Sharp tv or the Philips HTS, so these are my 2 questions:

    - what movie audio formats are supported by the Philips HTS3538/12 when the source is the ARC function from the HDMI connection?
(mp3, AAC, wav, ac3, dts, etc?)

    - what movie audio formats are supported by the Philips HTS3538/12 when the source is the Optical In connection (SPDIF)?

    Thanks in advance,
    Vitor

A new detail that I found out is that even though the movie files have the sound encoded with the AAC or LPCM audio format with 5.1 channels, the HTS only outputs stereo.

So maybe it is a problem with the Sharp tv. Can someone else please confirm that the HTS can indeed play the ac3 sound format when the source is the HDMI ARC?

And if that isn't possible, would it decode ac3 when the source is the Optical In SPDIF?

    Thanks,
    Vitor

Hi, you can find the audio format supported by the HTS in this spec-sheet: http://download.p4c.philips.com/file..._pss_enggb.pdf

Hello MrBarton, and thank for your reply.

I already read through the specifications sheet and the user manual, but I didn't get a clear answer to my question (for example the HTS supports AAC, but that's nowhere to be found on the spec sheet).

Anyways, I'm convinced the problem really is in the Sharp tv. If I force Dolby Digital either using the computer or my PS3, there's a message form the tv saying that an unsupported audio stream as been received and it doesn't send it through the ARC.

I've searched the web and there seems to be plenty of situations like mine with other products.

I'll just have to buy a sound card with SPDIF and install it in the computer, so I can link it directly to the HTS.

    Best regards,
    Vitor
