    Thumbs up Technical feedback - FW v000.171.056.000 (171.56) - for 6/7/8xx8 series - 2013

    Hi all.

The new FW is now live. For details please see here:
    6xx8: http://philips.to/1gpsy0o
    7xx8: http://philips.to/19dzo2X
    8xx8: http://philips.to/1gpsCxs

This thread is for technical feedback only. For other discussions please post in the related discussion thread. "Off topic" posts regarding the firmware will be moved to the discussion thread.

    Important:
After upgrading your TV, it is necessary to perform a "cold start". This means that, after the TV is running again (after the update), shut down the TV, wait 1 minute (till all components are shut down), and unplug the TV from the mains (pull power cord) for 2 minutes before starting again.

Good to see the forum's finally back.

    Here's my short feedback:

    ============================
    TV Model: 40PFL8008K
    Previous Firmware: 171.051

    Positive:

    Negative:

Still no fix for the flashing ambilight issue with 24p material
    ============================

I have to say Philips, this is VERY DISAPPOINTING and getting close to UNACCEPTABLE. My faith in the Philips software engineers has almost disappeared. I don't understand why they cannot fix this annoying bug which has existed for 6 months now.

    TV Model: 40PFL8008
Previous Firmware: not sure, the factory installed one, 68.xx

Please note that I did upgrade as written, unplugging power, etc. Also, I reset to factory defaults few time, and also did few reinstallations on TV. Nothing helps.

    Positive:
    +
    +
    +

    Negative:
    - issue 1. Screen Edges setting is not saved for Analogue channels.
e.g. the default setting is 10. I can set the slider for example to 5, it works. But as I switch to another analog channel, the image changes again as if the slider is at 10, but the slider still shows 5. Moving the slider to 6 and back to 5 resets the image to 5, but its not kept when I switch channels. This problem appears on any picture format setting, from autofill to unscaled. Please take it seriously. Its not a usage problem. Its a real bug.

    - issue 2. Switching from unscaled or autozoom Analog channel to USB or Network and back to Analog channel stretches the image horizontally as if the format is set to "wide screen", with COMPLETE LOSS of sharpness. Format setting is still the original, and changing to any other format DOES NOT HELP. Switching TV off and on DOES NOT HELP! Only switching to HDMI input and back resets the picture to original format.

    - issue 3. Implementation of "unscaled" picture format is wrong. In my other 40 PFL5507, when I set picture format to unscaled, the image is centered on the screen with original pixel to pixel proportions. This can be seen when you set the HDMI out on BDP3385 to 480/572p. This is how it should be.
With 40pfl8008, the image is still stretched to full screen, which is not what "unscaled" should do. This is rather "autofill" behavior.

    - issue 4. Implementation of "autozoom"- it does not keep the aspect ratio of unscaled. The whole idea of autozoom is to zoom to the nearest screen edge while keeping the aspect ratio. In 8008, the autozoom provides more horizontal stretch then unscaled format. E.g. the circle is round on unscaled, but becomes slightly wider horizontally, like ellipse, on autozoom. It is acceptable for autofill format, but autozoom should keep the aspect ratio of unscaled image.

    - issue 5. compared to pfl5507, the image is not as sharp, even with sharpness on 8008 set to 10 and advanced sharpness to on. Also, I noticed on HDMI input, any screen edge setting greater than 0 kills the sharpness.

    - issue 6. Playback of 21:9 material via USB. I expect the image to have black stripes above and below the image when the format is set to unscaled. Nevertheless, unscaled fills the whole screen the same way as autofill, with distorted aspect ratio. Only autozoom provides the correct aspect ratio. This is very different from pfl5507, where it works correctly.

    - issue 7. upscaling is very rough, the diagonal lines have distinct zigsaw edges on material with lower resolution than 1080, visible 3 meters apart from TV

OVERALL: there seem to be many problems with TV internal scaler and its sw implementation

    TV Model: 47PFL6008K/12
    Previous Firmware: 171.51

    Positive:
+ No difference that I can see, at least in my normal usage

    Negative:
    - Still no program name text in EPG as in firmwares 171.51, 171.49 and 68.18. The problem has been described by me and other users in different topics, but the short version is that there is no text for the name of the current/next/any program in the info on the channel and also in the guide via DVB-C. The data is sent by my provider and I can see the timelines correctly and sometimes in the info there is also a description of the current show (recent screenshot - https://www.dropbox.com/s/mgctq9vj04...2022.09.31.jpg ), but there is no name of the show/movie. Please fix this, I want to have a normal overview on what is currently running on my TV without having to go through paper schedule like in the past!

Previous Firmware: xx.xx (please fill in)

    Positive:
+ Quick start up implementation works better now.

    Negative:
    - Netflix still forces picture mode to Standard. I wan't to disable PNM.
    - Game and PC modes severely crush black levels and causes lots of gradient/color banding on image. Is this intentional and absolutely needed for the reduced input lag?
    - Please try to further reduce input lag on game mode.
    - Perfect Natural Motion sometimes is automatically enabled when I start up TV, even though I have disabled it from settings. Sometimes it even seems to be on, after i manually disable it again.

    Dear Philips workers,

Hereby my 2 biggest concerns for my 55PFL8008K/12:

    - Ambilight flickering when playing MKV files with my media player. The ambilight works perfectly except for 24p files, so this must be a software problem.
    - Connectivity by UTP cable is unstable. This is a real big problem, i connected my TV with a UTP cable.
When browsing NET TV and playing a file from RTL XL or 'Uitzending gemist' it always quits within 1 - 10 minutes. The file stops playing, TV goes back to smart TV main screen. Here is what i tried:
    - Other UTP cable, nothing changed
    - Other UTP socket from other place in my house, nothing changed
    - Connecting a 42PFL9664 to the same UTP socket and cable, works perfectly.
    - Today they replaced the motherboard (SSB), nothing changed.
Everytime when i make a hard reset (removing electricty cable) and setup a new cabled connection, the connection works, but it drops out everytime after 1 - 10 minutes. I have no other conclusion that this must be a software failure, since my other Philips television is working fine. The Philips helpdesk can not help me any further. Please check this problem and fix it in the next firmware. Please contact me if you have any questions or have tips to fix this.

    Negative:
    - Perfect Natural motion is constantly turned on causing soap opera effect. The only way to remedy this is to go into the menu and set PNM to max and then back to off.

    TV Model: 47PFL6008K/12
    Previous Firmware: 171.51

    1) turning on quickboot leads to very unpredictable TV behaviour. Ranging from not switching on to crashing smart tv. Resetting TV settings and performing cold boot seems to remedy problems, as long as directly after reboot, quickboot is disabled immediately
    2) netflix unstablility; sometimes netflix refuses to start (mostly after prior usage, without TV shutdown), even though the smart tv startscreen is working. Only remedy is to unplug tv and perform cold boot. Just power cycling by remote does not help.
    3) netflix audio: supposedly, netflix provides dolby digital on newer shows (such as House of cards) and movies. TV optical out only provides stereo to receiver though (Netflix NL)
    4) still no DTS accepted through HDMI input (DTS sound is working when playing from USB or DLNA)
    5) still no EPG data in combination with DVB-C (using the EPG from the DVB provider that is). Timeslots are showing, and sometimes in the info panel additional information does appear. Which leads me to suspect that the data is present, just not correctly displayed on the TV. More over; iPad is showing the correct data through the Philips app.
    6) Pausing live TV only works on DVB-C HD channels, with previous firmwares this also worked on DVB-C SD channels. With current firmware, when pressing pause on SD channels, screen blanks shortly and then the broadcast continues with live stream
    7) PNM artefacts appear to be more severe, even at the lowest setting, compared to previous firmwares
    8) HDMI CEC sometimes works, than TV blanks, picture is returned but CEC control is gone (happens to receiver, Raspberry Pi and Windows 7 Media center PC). Sometimes also leads to TV reboot when using CEC on connected devices
    9) HDMI ARC sound that arrives at receiver stutters and breaks up so badly that it is unusable. Sound send from receiver HDMI to TV works flawlessly (apart from missing DTS, see point 4)

All in all, I like the fact that Netflix is there, but the experience is still highly unstable, even more than 6 months after the introduction of this model.

I am even willing to beta test firmwares for certain fixes if desired, anything to get this TV to do what it is supposed to be doing.

    + fast enough boot
    + guide response fine

    Negative:
    - some channels still give 'no information' in EPG
    - internet guide is totally useless. please make this look and behave like normal EPG as it's horrible this way but necessary to use with philips android application.

    TV Model: 55PFL7008
    Previous Firmware: 68.18

    Positive:
+ slighty improved boot up speed when no external disk attached
+ Timeshiht does not jump to beginning when doing first ffwd or rwnd. At last!!
+ IP-EPG now shows channels in tunning order. At last!!

    Negative:
    -Amblight controls still messed up
    -SmartTV still unusable: painfully slow
-IP-EPG still painfully slow. It takes ages to schedule a recording.
-Menus still painfully slow By far the worst "feature" of this TV. Every single time someone comes by and chek it out, you loose one potential buyer, seriously!
-Still no way to deactivate continuous timeshifting: wears disk an slows booting

    Neutral (did not test):
+- DVB-EPG allows free recording scheduling?
+- Very annoying message asking to update, every single time I turn on the TV. I just updated to get rid of this nightmare. Please so allow updates searching based on scheduling (weekly, monthly, etc) like any other program in the world.

    Hello all,

I recently bought a 42PFL7008 TV set in Belgium which had a DuoDeals action so I got an additional free 32PFL3258 TV. The 2 TVs are connected to a home network through the RJ45 ports and are set up to play movies from a Synology NAS. Having 2 Philips TVs allows easy comparison between features/bug of the 2.

    ============================
    TV Model: 42PFL7008
    Previous Firmware: 171.56

    Positive:
+ Powerup behaviour has improved vs the previous FW
+ Lounge light seems to work better than in the past

    Negative:
    - No external subtitle (.srt) support over a network connection. From other forum posts I understand this is a commercial decision. This is hard to understand though, as the competition does support it, and it would make managing subtitles so much easier.
    - Embedded subtitles (in .mkv s) do not work on my 7 series TV. They do work on my 3 series TV. I would be very happy if they work as they do on the 3 series
    - Complex 1080p scenes (confetti, snow) of a DTS-sound movie cause image freezes/hickups on the 7 series TV. The exact same movie/scenes on the 3 series TV play fine (without sound -> no DTS support). Is this due to the DTS decoding? If so, please improve the decoding so that no hickups occur. The 3 series could also use DTS support, but I suppose that belongs in a different thread.
    - DLNA/Simplyshare foto sharing: files are often not listed while browsing through folders. This seems to occur more for folder(name)s starting with a lowercase-letter. Waiting does not help. Pressing 'OK' does open the relevant pictures of the folder. This does not happen on the 3 series TV, there they are always listed (after a while). Although browsing seems faster on the 7 series, it is not of much use if it does not list files always.
    - Sound synchronisation is bad sometimes. Especially after use of SmartTV functionality the sound is practically always noticably skewed from the image giving a dreadfull TV experience. This happens on all types of input. If this happens the only way to get rid of it is turning on/off the TV set.
    - Slow menus overall, as mentioned by others
    - Use of keyboard on remote for youtube. In the latest youtube SW the use of the keyboard is very limited.
    ============================

Overall there are still too much bugs in the DLNA/SimplyShare features to recommend this TV to anyone. Also the FW on the 3 series seems much maturer than the one on the 7 series. I would expect the opposite given the price difference between the 2 series.

    Best regards,
    Bert
