Thumbs down 32PFL5604H/12 - firmware updates

    Hi,

my model hasn't received an update since 2010...

The usb player functionality is embarassing (i.e. exploring a usb drive doesn't even sort items by name).
Frequently while playing a video from usb, playback starts getting choppy.

I'm not asking for new codecs (x264 @L4+, etc) or container compatibility (mkv, hello?!??!).
I'm just asking for basic usability feature improvements.
All firmware upgrades realeased were bugfixes, no new features were ever added.

Sadly, jointSpace doesn't do firmware for sets without network interfaces.

So, am I stuck with a TV that Philips dropped support for, or is there any tiny hope left for people like me unwilling to buy a new TV set every 2-3 years?

Any chance of Philips releasing the source code AT LEAST for models no longer supported?

I wouldn't have bought a Philips if I knew after market practices were this crappy. Sure as hell my next TV set won't be a Philips...

I would appreciate any sort of reply.

    Hi taaadaaa,

All Philips TV customers can request the source code of the open source software at:

    Intellectual Property Department,
    TP Vision Netherlands B.V.,
    P.O. Box 80077,
    5600 KA Eindhoven,
    The Netherlands

You will need to request this in writing via regular post. There is currently no alternative contact option.

    Best regards,
    Ina

    Hi Ina,

    I appreciate the reply.

I am well aware that Philips is required by law to freely and diligently provide the source code of the OPEN SOURCE software components used by its products.

My question was about the model's firmware as a whole, thus including the CLOSED SOURCE (ie. Philips intellectual propery) pieces.

If Philips is not willing / able to continue support for older models, why not empower customers to congregate and release unofficial (read as UNSUPPORTED), after-market firmware versions?
Worst case scenario for Philips is people showing up in repair shops in Philips' support ecosystem with dead Tv sets due to unofficial firmware messing up, thus generating addiotional income FOR PHILIPS.
Best case scenario, customers are satisfied with being free to upgrade products they paid decent bucks for.

I am almost certain you forum mods have little or no contact with the "relevant" levels of authority in Philips (or what's left of it)...

Can you at least forward the following question to the development department? : "Will the model 32PFL5604H/12 ever receive other firmware updates, and if so, when?"

    Thank you.

I don't think there is much of a chance that any company will part with their intellectual property freely...
