    GoGear Mix SA5MXX

Philips GoGear Mix 4GB SA5MXX. Firmware version 1.09.

Every time I run this device it starts playing audio on volume level being fixed at 8.

Every time I want to increase the volume above 8 I have to confirm it and unlock the volume and then set it to the level I need.

After turning the device off and turning it on again, volume level is locked on 8 again.

I have to unlock the volume level every time I start the device.

I understand that the volume lock was implemented in order to comply with a regulation in the European Union for protecting hearing safety, but users should be given an opportunity to unlock the volume permanently after being warned through device settings.

Personally I use this device to play low gain lecture recordings that naturally requires high volume to be heard. I listen to these records using audio speakers not earphones, therefore I'm not risking in damaging my hearing.

Users are complaining about this volume lock in other threads too:

Dear Philips, users should be given an opportunity to do what they want and need after being warned.

Please, implement a feature to permanently disable volume lock on device settings by making a firmware update for GoGear Mix SA5MXX.

Please add this feature by making a firmware update.

    Please.

    Dear Hugh Tash,

    Thank you for the post.

Unfortunately, as mentioned before, the volume of the player is capped to comply with a regulation in the European Union for protecting hearing safety (EN 60950-1). From that reason, we are not able to change it.

    When:

the volume reaches a high level; or
    You have been listening at a high volume level for 20 hours;
A pop-up screen stating ‘Do you want to keep on current high volume level?’ will be displayed. To unlock this volume limit, select [Yes].

The next time you start your Mix 5, unfortunately yes, you have to manually go over that volume limit again.

    Thanks for understanding.

    Kind regards,
    Philips Moderation Team

I'm glad that EU cares about their citizens and do its best to protect their hearing health.

Looking into future, will all newer portable audio devices have this 'high volume' notification / confirmation feature?

What about other sound devices, such as CD/DVD/Bluray/Internet players, home theaters, soundbars?
