    58PFL9956 With HTPC

    Hi all,

I own a 58PFL9956 tv. Before i used a raspberry pi with xbmc on it to watch movies etc. Works fine.
But this one couldnt play my blurays.
Now i have bought a HTPC with an optical bluray player in it and a AMD A6 processor.
On the HTPC i set the resolution to 1920x800px (and used this also in the XBMC settings). When i play movies inside XBMC it works fine and fullscreen.

But when i want to play my bluray with POWERDVD or Media Theatre it looks like the resolution is switched to 1920x1080. and not fullscreen anymore. so when i want to watch a 2:35 movie i still got these ugly black bars everywhere

When i play a 3D bluray i also get the black bars.

People here wo are using this tv with a HTPC and would like to share there settings, tips, tricks?
I would love to play my blurays like they should. without the horrible black bars. this is why i got this tv

    Hi,

1920x800: your TV is zooming this resolution to fullscreen
1920x1080: you need to switch your TV to autozoom to have fullscreen

You can't use the native resolution of your TV with your HTPC. The internal processing is limited to 1920x1080. To have fullscreen, the source is always zoomed/scaled.

    Hi,

Oke but on my PC i should always set the resolution to 1920x1080 and use a different mode on the tv to show this on the screen?

Now with the resolution set to 1920x800 and tv mode set to 21:9 XBMC (and my windows desktop) is showing like it should. Also when i play movies from XBMC the aspect ratio is good.

    example:

When i play a bluray disc using Media Theatre is wrong and black bars all over the place

But i will try to set it to 1920x1080 and play with some tv settings and XBMC settings etc.

    Hi,

1920x800 is the correct resolution regarding scaling to 21:9 without changing the aspect ratio. But you will notice also the black bars on your TV, if you set your TV to "unscaled"...

Still playing with resolutions and tv modes. short update.

    XBMC
    2:35 movies
These play fine and full screen like it should. example:

    XBMC
    16:9 tvshows/concerts/movies etc
Inside xbmc i press auto-zoom and it works also great
    Before:

    after auto-zoom:

    ------------------------------------------------------

    BLURAY

    16:9 Movies
Starts in 1920x1080 so you loose some screen (not a big deal)
But because the resolution auto changed you get black bars left and right. Switching tv mode doesn't change the view to get rid of the bars

    BLURAY
    2:35 movies
Same as 16:9 versions, you loose some screen during menus etc because of the auto switch to 1920x1080 but i can live with that.
But during the movie you get the left and right bars + the letterbox bars.

Need to find a way to get the 1920x1080 resolution to fit from the left to right side.
oh and sorry for the crappy iphone photos :P

I was searching the forums/web and found this topic: http://www.supportforum.philips.com/...ll=1#post35555

But on my PC i can't set a custom resolution in AMD Catalyst. The highest value i can set is 1920x1080.
Now i found this tool to set a custom resolution, but it is for "down"scaling: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=366244

So i guess this won't work. I will try this today after work.

    FIXED!

This is how i connected my HTPC with the 58PFL9956:

    Hardware:
    • Scythe Shuriken Rev.B SCSK-1100
    • Corsair XMS3 - 4 GB
    • Be quiet! System Power 7 300W
    • AMD A serie A6-6400K - 3.9 GHz
    • SilverStone MILO ML04
    • Samsung 840 EVO Basic 120GB
    • ASUS BC 12D2HT
    • ASRock FM2A88M Extreme4+

    software:
    • Windows 7 64Bit
    • XBMC
    • VirtualClone Drive
    • TotalMedia Theatre 5

    Settings:
The default screen resolution in windows is set to 1920x800 and the tv is set to mode "Auto-fill".
XBMC is still running great with these settings (see posts above). All 2:35 movies are running great. All 16:9 movies are zoomed inside XBMC.

Playing a Bluray or bluray iso i use TotalMedia Theatre 5. When the bluray starts the screen resolution switched to 1920x1080. Next make do the folowing:
    1. Pause the movie (bluray)
    2. Go back to the desktop
    3. Right mouseclick and go to the AMD catalyst control center
    4. Check if the resolution is 1920x1080
    5. Go to the screen (digital) tab
    6. Select the scaling options
    7. Set the overscan to 0
    8. Save the settings.

Now the 1920x1080 screen is fitted on your tv from the left to right side.
When you go back to the bluray at play it again the tv mode "auto fill" gets rid of the black top and bottoms bars.

Don't know if this is the right way to do (still testing with these settings). But for now it looks like it is working great
