PHILIPS Indoor wireless headphones - SHC5100

I was given the headphones over 2 years ago as a present but have not used them very often. The only time I use them is for T.V. (just now for the world cup, my wife hates it goes to bed and bangs on the floor for me to turn the T.V. down!).
When I try to use them I am getting no sound at all on the headset until I hold them over, or very close to the Antenna Tube. When I do this I get a crackling noise which you can not lisen to as soon as you move the headset more than 6/8inch. away from the transmitter there is nothing. I have tryed changing channels, fully charging batteries. all the right LED lights come on and as I have been using the headphones for over 2 years I am sure I am doing everything right!
The only thing I can think of is the rechargeable batteries need replacing but I find it strange as they have hardly been used and I have also tryed using "non rechargable AAA alkaline batteries" with no difference, still get crackling noise when I hold headset over antenna. Can you suggest any thing else I can try or do I need to send them of for repair or should I just replace (I dont want to do this because of the short amount of time I have used them and I like them very much, when they are working).

Please treat this as a matter of urgency as the World Cup Final is in a couple of weeks!
