Gogear Tap 4.3 - UTF support
Hi,
I bought Philips GoGEAR SA4TP404KF/94. Before start to load all my songs, i tested with few songs. I found there is not display of ID3 tag details in the music player.
I have songs of various languages and maintain ID3 tags of the songs in the corresponding languages. The songs with english fonts in ID3 tag are displayed properly, where as songs with other languages (mostly Tamil and few Hindi) ID3 tag details are blank.
Pliz guide me to fix this issue.

Dear Jeyaraj,
Thank you for posting on the forum. Please see information below.
When the music tracks, songs or audio clips in MP3 format embedded with tags encoded with traditional charsets, especially for non-Western European languages, the characters may not be displayed properly, gibberish, unintelligible, appear as question marks or squares, or simply as weird garbage character. The wrong character encoding issue problem also happens to playlist which contains MP3 tracks with traditional character encoding.
The issue can be solved if the ID3 tags is written and stored in Unicode (UTF-8) character encoding format, which contains most if not all characters for most languages in the world, and supported by all operating system for software-based media player and hardware-based media player gadget. In some player, user can force the encoding for specific code page, but then it’s impossible to display tags of several international languages at the same time if files are so encoded.
Users can re-type and re-enter the ID3 tags of MP3 in Unicode charset encoding manually for each and every MP3s. However, it’s much easier to be able to let software utility automatically convert and change the character encoding of ID3 tags to Unicode (UTF-8). Here are a few software utilities that can do the conversion.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Sarka

Thanks for the detailed reply.
I used Google Input Tools for editing my ID3 Tags.
I am not sure if it used UTF-8. Googling about that did not give much information. Please throw some light on the same.
If the existing one is not UTF-8 standard, is there any program to change it to UTF-8 without loss of existing ID3 details. Kindly note that these ID3 tag details are appearing perfect in all other devices I use such as Logitech SBT, Android based Mobiles and Apple Ipod Touch.
I have more than 1000 songs, and it will be practically not possible to re-edit all the ID3 tags. Kindly help.
Thanks for taking time to help.
Regards,
K. Jeyaraj

Dear Jeyaraj,
Have you tried the mentioned software to see if it works? I'd suggest to start with few songs first.
Kind regards,
Sarka

Hello Jeyaraj,
Sorry, I meant Google Input Tools. Have you tried coding of some songs with this tool?
What about Softpedia software?
Kind regards,
Sarka

As I have mentioned in the earlier post, I have used Google Input Tool for adding the ID3 Tag. These ID3 Tags are not visible (except for dots and numbers). However the same songs when used in Laptop/PC or other portable devices ID3 Tags are visible properly.
I start to feel bad about this purchase.
I tried to attach a sample mp3 file, but it failed. I have uploaded in a free file hosting site and providing the link here
http://www.filedropper.com/anjali-iravunilavu
Hope you can help by giving some hint or release some firmware to resolve this issue

Hi,
As I have mentioned already in the earlier posts, Google Input Tools was used to type ID3 Tag for all these files. Though ID3 Tag of these mp3 files are properly visible in all other devices, only with this Philips TAP MP4 player, ID3 Tags are not visible (only dots and numbers appear correctly all other characters are blank).
I am beginning to regret the purchase of this device.
Kindly help in resolving the issue.

K. Jeyaraj

Thanks for the reply. I tried the software given in the link to edit and save ID3 tag of one mp3 song. Also used another program (i.e., https://code.google.com/p/open-mp3-id3-tag/) with another mp3 song. Then uploaded the file into the Philps Gogear TAP 4.3.
Still both files' TAG appears as blank item. Both songs play pretty well, but no info about title, artist, album artist etc.
So what shall I do next?
Regards,
K. Jeyaraj
