Access time for various USB HDDs

I do believe this is not limited to the 8000 series but most BDPs. When I upgraded to SW 1.56 I could not help notice that it took almost a minute from the moment I selected Browse USB untill I could actually browse what was on the USB unit.

I recently discovered that may not bee the BDP but the USB HDD, which I changed the same day. When I tried another USB HDD it took less than three seconds before its content was available on the BPD. Could you list what USB HDDs you use and if it takes a long time for the BDP to initialize them? I hope it may help Philips get a better understanding of the issue and perhaps find out if there is anything that could be made on behalf of the BDP software to improve startup time with the "slower" drives.

WD Elements 2 TB (3.5" with external power supply) - 40-60 seconds to start with the BPD8000
LaCie Rikiki 500 GB (2.5", powered by the BDP) - 1-3 seconds to start with the BDP8000

both of the HDDs are full with data? or just "some" movies etc.
I would say that the Player makes some kind of indexing, so the more files you got on the HDD or Stick, the slower it is. I use a Hitachi 1TB on the BDP8000 the HDD is full with Vidoes, audio and Pictures, it takes ~1min to initialize the Disk

I had the same experiences with my external usb disks.
There were NTFS formatted with 1TB. It took forever to actually get into the directories to play a file from there.

I parted them now (still with NTFS) in 160GB pieces and it works like a charm now.
Sure, i have more partitions to go through but access time is much better now and i have
the feeling that horrible freezes are almost gone ... let's see

so this can be stated as a bug (from my point of view). Philips should take a look at it and update the "HDD-reading"-libraries...

a_Tom, I should have written in my first post that both disks have the same data on them.

Samsung HDD G2 320GB (2.5", powered by the BDP) - minimum 50-60 seconds
(NTFS)(bdp 5180)(100movies+5000photos)

Maybe it is me but with 5000 photos and 100 movies it looks normal that it takes so long, i have the same. The BDP is not a PC that would recognize it more fast. Interesting would be to see what happens when connected to a different brand to see what the story is.....
