What about recording from TV to a HDD(via USB or NAS)?
I own the 47PFL8404H since a little more than one year and I am overall happy with it.
But, I am missing a feature which would make the TV simply the best on the market:
Recording video on a hard drive (either connected via USB or accessible on the network (e.g. NAS) )
I am not familiar with the other Philips products except of the one i own, so I don't know if the feature exists in other devices.
Does Philips consider to add such a feature in its TVs with USB and/or network support and, of course, especially in the model I wrote above ?
Thanks
Sorin

Recording is very limited on all Brands ( you can only see on the Tv because of DRM, and you have to format the HDD to work on TV), and even more on Philips, it´s only for rental on-line film.

Well, I don't agree with this approach.
If such a feature exists, it is user's responsibility to respect the copyrights and not the manufacturer's.
Otherwise, all stereo recorders should be banned because there are definitely some users who use them to record copyrighted content.
It would be nice to see an official roadmap of the upcoming features coming from Philips.

Hi msorin,
Recording from TV onto USB-HDD or network-based storage solutions (e.g. a NAS drive) will not be possible with your 47PFL8404H.
Philips will introduce TVs with USB recoding functionalities (which also includes Timeshift recording on USB mass storage devices) this year with the current 2k11 TV range.
This functionality will be supported by all 2k11 TVs from 6000 series sets upwards (for the 6000 series a software update is needed in order to activate this functionality).
There will only be support for recording onto USB mass storage media. In order to follow several security regulations, the USB HDD will be formatted with EXT3 file system which also implies that there is not specific size limit for the HDD.
Please mind that recording onto network storage media (NAS) will not be supported!
The USB HDD should have a capacity of at least 32GB (or exceeding this) in order to provide enough space for the timeshift recording feature.
A scheduled recording is only possible by using the internet-based IP-EPG. Therefore, an existing network connection is required to support this functionality. However, the timeshift recording feature will not depend on an existing internet connection.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
So, just to make sure that I understand correctly:
You say that this feature will not be possible on my TV.
But, you also write that the feature is going to be supported in the new firmwares from the 6000 series upwards.
Doesn't it automatically mean that also my device, which is 8000 series, will be supported (through a software update) ?
Btw, I hope you realize that EXT3 will make the feature quasi unusable for 99.9% of the users.
I strongly recommend that you use NTFS because Linux is not so spread among home users.
But, no matter how it will be implemented I would be able to use the feature because I have some Linux computers at home.
Thanks
Sorin

Hi
What the Mod was saying is that this feature will be available from 6000 series Onwards for 2K11 TVs.
The 8404 is 2k9.
EXT3 is not useless, even for Windows Users.
There are a lot of Drivers and Software available to be able to access EXT3 from Windows XP, Vista or 7.

Strange that Philips doesnot help the 2010-modelusers. This should be on the 2010-models too. What do you think Philips??? Customers that bought a 2010-model will never buy a new tv in 2011!!!!!! When you buy a tv you use it for 8-10 years!!! Its so stange Philips has a short-term view towards marketing.
A lot of things bother me in the way I am treated as a customer by Philips and this is reason to never buy a Philips tv again.

I would say 15~20 years, if nothing goes wrong with the TV, but times they are a' changin'.
I had to give up in November 2010 waiting for an OLED TV (at reasonable cost and size) - I've been waiting since year 2003, when I've bought a Kodak photo camera with an OLED display.
OLED is soooooo much better... blacks are really blacks, no backlighting needed, it is at another level.
When you watch an OLED screen you realize how much flawed LCD is, it needs a lot of trickery to produce decent image.
When everyone has finally bought LCD TVs to all of the house, they will finally launch OLED TVs and try to sell you because it's a "cool", better and "new" technology.
LCD and plasma really seems pre-historic to me, these days.
But that's what you can buy at present.Last edited by carlosfm; 06-03-2011 at 10:12 AM.

Hi,
I also think that the program is encrypted on the HDDs and consequently one is not able to make copies on PCs. And for this encryption one needs new hardware chips which are only present in 2011 series...
