BDP 9500 - noisy during normal playback- is this normal?
What do other owners of this blu ray player notice during normal playback of a disk? When I mute the sound, I can hear a hum/hiss, very much like a fan running but this then goes much quieter when I either pause playback or go to fast forward. I have turned off the TV and AV amp to ensure there is no other background noise.
Most of the time I dont notice this during films but then in quiet scenes, I can always hear this hum.
The player is connected to a 56 21:9 cinema screen with me sitting at least 3m away from the player.
Dont know whether to contact the Philips online shop where I bought this, get a technician around (and potentially pay if he says that this is what all do) or accept that this is what this model does.

I think this is normal. If you have the mute on, it means that the disc keeps on playing just with the audio disabled. Hence, the disc will keep on spinning and playing and the little fan running hum/hiss noise is normal. If you have the pause on, that means you stop the disc running. Hence there will not be the humming noise.
From the message above, the noise is only present when you press mute. I think that's acceptable and it's not faulty...What you think?
Thanks for the reply. I can understand that during pause, the disk is not running but this does not explain why the noise level from the machine is lower during fast forward compared to normal play. I am probably listening out for the background noise more now when watching films and it is annoying that during a film when the music and speech goes dead quiet, I can heat this hum/hiss.
Could you check out your machine and tell me whether there is any difference in noise levels between normal play and fast forward.

But the fan is MUCH toooooo noisy. It's so loud it is distracting ! Can the fan be replaced with a silent one ? Cheaper blu-ray players from other brands are completely silent.
During the first 5 months it spent more time at a Philips service centre instead of in my living room. Sent back 5 or 6 times for repairs. Philips technicians even managed to send it back after a couple of weeks without having repaired it.
So due to CRAP service I am even willing to pay to have the fan replaced with a silent one, but will my warranty still be valid ?
Knowing this player's history I suspect I may have to need it again.
My experience is that this BD player makes some noise whilst playing a DVD, but not when playing a BD. I had to bring this player back three times for repairs and although I mentioned this problem too, they could never fix this.
I have just returned a 7200 cos it was too loud. I asked Philips support team whether I was just unlucky and got a noisy one but they did say they are not silent and couldn't say for sure if I had another one it would be any quieter. I proffered that I would trade up for a more expensive model if it was quieter but they couldn't say that it would be any quieter. I've looked on a few sites and this seems a common trait with other makes also. I am going to make do with my old silent DVD player and wait a bit to see if things improve. I agree with comments that for a hifi unit this is very disappointing. My unit was loud with any out any disk in, so not a drive issue. And the unit was cold. I assume the fan is on permanently rather than heat sensitive?
After the 5th or 6th time my 9500 had to go in for repairs within a year they finally gave me a new unit, but as the 9500 was no longer available I got the 9600 and that one is really quiet (though it has other issues).
I've had Blu-ray players from different brands and only the Philips one was so noisy (mine was even noisier than the PS3 fan).
It's a great shame because the audio and video are superb.
I grew up with Philips and bought often electronics of that brand, but over the past few years they've let me down and this was definitely my last Philips purchase. Customer service is really bad.

Hello I have this forum to complain because I sent my drive repair a year ago because it was noisy ... the repairman told me that it was normal and he could do nothing.

for noise issue, it really needs to go to service as it s hardware issue
