DLNA streaming support for external subtitle files .srt

Sorry, but I have to disagree with this.

The DLNA standard actually does support additional subtitle (.srt) files, and is already used by many DNLA media renderers, e.g. Philips HMP5000, Samsung B/C/D TV series, LG TV/player, Panasonic Viera and WD TV HD Live (see profiles.xml from Serviio Media Server and their page on subtitle support for details).
It is specified in the DMR profile by using e.g. <SubtitlesMimeType>text/srt</SubtitlesMimeType>


This is what serviio returns as item within the ContentDirectory: "urn:schemas-upnp-org:service:ContentDirectory:1"

As you can see, the URI to the .srt file is given in the media directory and can be read through HTTP.

Now it's just a matter of the Philips TV to actually detect and load the text/srt resource entry and display it like an USB-based srt file.

I realize Philips' limited manpower in adding such functions, but of course I still hope to see this one day in the distant future as firmware update for our TVs.

One additional note: The reason to assume that the DLNA spec doesn't support external subtitles, is probably, because it's already supported but not mentioned explicitly.
That assumption is wrong, however: One or several external subtitle files can be added like any other additional resource, such as JPEG thumbnails, to the ContentDirectory.

This document on AVTransport mentions this (p.56&58), but even though people from Philips are listed as co-authors, it didn't seem to have spread around the company.

Update: Actually, as the HMP5000 supports external subtitles through DLNA, it _did_ spread around, just not to the TV guys.

Philips, can we expect to see DLNA subs soon? They are part of the standard (see answer above, especially this document: http://www.upnp.org/specs/av/UPnP-av...e-20101231.pdf) and you mark your TV sets as standard compliant. I can't believe you couldn't fully implement the standard you partially made or contributed to.

Disappointed... bought 40PFL7007K hoping it's top-notch and fully DLNA compliant. Now I learn the manual lies about srt support, as it can't be used with DLNA. So one of the most important functionality for me is broken

I am very disappointed in reading this. I have QNAP storage at home and a lot of movies that I had planned to watch on TV with subtitles. As things stands there is nothing of it. In my opinion DLNA without this option losing any meaning. Philips told us in previous posts what think about .srt support and I feel so cheated.

A bought pfl7605 last year and it doesnt even support subtitles over USB so subtitles over DLNA was only the dream. But my father bought pfl 6606h and subtitles over DLNA also doesnt work. I bougt lacie lacinema classic for this purpose and by me now subtitles over lacie lacinema hdmi works fine but father is still without them. So yes phillips i also think that subtitles over DLNA is key feature in this times, otherwise my next tv and all my friend next tv and all my familly next tv would not be phillips. if others can do it you should too. Don't tell us stories about cost.

It's quite disappointing if you have a DLNA-compliant NAS and a Philips TV which should be DLNA-compliant (from the specs) but does not implement the whole standard.

It's more disappointing to see that the Philips moderators tell us some fairy tales ("subtitles are not DLNA-compliant") and they don't care about our points.

The facts are:
- Subtitles are included in the DLNA-Standard.
- Philips had 4 people in the Steering Committee of the UPnP Forum which created the standard
- Philips implemented this feature in other devices
- Philips seems to have the base features in their TV-sets (Subtitles from USB and getting UPNP-Resources from the DLNA-Server), but they tell us the combination is to expensive.

If the software architecture of the firmware isn't that crappy you can implement this feature in max. 2-3 man-days.
QA should be the same.

If we estimate the costs, it would cost about 3000-5000 dollar.

According to the amount of users who would use this feature maybe a small amount of costs.

Correct me if there are any mistakes in my calculations.

Maybe we should start some online petition...

We should make a petition because it is obvious that Philips will not make support for subtitles. I don`t know why .mkv subtitles are not supported? It is so frustrating to have TV with ethernet and wifi without use of it

And who can't watch tv with just english audio they need those swedish subs or at least english subs to pick up on words when they hear badly!

just spent a whole lot of money on my TV (46PFL5007K/12) especially for this, and now you throw me this in my face! not cool!
have to admit! it's my bad that i didn't do any further research. if i knew about it i wouldn't have bought it and i would have picked something else! and it's kinda your fault not telling about it to let people know what to expect!
at least can you tell if Philips is going to work on this?
a simple update is necessary right?

Oh course it is their fault. When they advertise products they write DLNA 1.5 certified. And that is simply not true. In that same advertisement it says that I can play movies from iPhone directly to TV. (PFL4007H/12) I'd like to see someone from Philips to play a iPhone movie to TV.

How very disappointing.
I have read all the posts and don't see any willingness on the Philips side to respond to the users request. Furthermore: how disrespectful towards the customers and how stupid towards the competitors on the market? Makes no sense (nor simplicity)! Why bother with home networks and components connectivity (DLNA, NAS..., even LAN)?
Better buy Philips and get physical walking around with a USB thumbdrive copypasting your files back and forth.
Dear Philips, pretty please with sugar on top - add support for subtitles via DLNA in your next firmware - and do it quick.
