I am deeply disappointed in Phillips over this. This is a serious lack of feature, and Phillips is trying to hide from it by claiming they know their customers needs. They do not.
Several friends of mine are in the multimedia business, selling equipment like Phillips TV-sets. I am a technology fanatic, people come to me for advice on purchasing technology. And believe me, DLNA is not a feature for-geeks-only anymore. Of course I do not hesitate from telling about this real show-stopper to anyone I know in the business, and I know how the reception for this message is (it was not "oh well it's an expensive feature so I can understand phillips very well"). The reason I tell people about this lack of feature is to aid them in purchasing their TV and not to hold grudge over Phillips.
I have reported Phillips to the DLNA organization and asked for them to take action.
Edit: And by the way, I would be interested in DLNA servers supporting subtitles as in transcoding, personally. But first of all this should never have been necessary, and secondly my DLNA server is an asus router with USB-memory which makes it very much harder for me to install third-party software to support subtitles.Last edited by HSPalm; 04-29-2013 at 02:49 PM.

Just chiming in, in case anyone at Philips is listening, and counting requests..
Please Philips, add this feature, we are many users that really need this.

Whoops, looks like we have spoken without knowing. I got this reply from the DLNA organization just a couple days ago:
Dear Henrik,
Thanks for your interest in DLNA. Subtitles are not a mandatory requirement for DLNA certification. Subtitles are an optional feature and up to each manufacturer to decide if they wish to implement this feature.
Best Regards,
DLNA Certification Administration
With Phillips having this support from dlna.org we will likely never see any subtitled dlna streams from Phillips any time soon...

I am getting subtitles when streaming my movies on my TV but only when using Mezzmo server. No other server I tried worked for me
It supports external, embeded and burning subtitles and has device profile for Philips TVs. I think it is burning since Philips don't do streaming external or embeded.

Hi, I'm new here.
Recently, I have bought a Philips HTS3562 3D Bluray Home Theater.
This player do support DLNA, but the brochure or main product specification, even the receiver, product box don't have the DLNA certified logo. It only mention the support in the user manual.
I face the same problem where it didn't support external .srt subtitle for playback with the mkv.
However, the DLNA do support the subtitle embedded into the mkv file itself.
The only way to work around, is to mux the subtitle into the mkv file.
The recommended solution from the DivX support website is using mkvmerge GUI v2.9.5 software.
This is a very straight forward tools and is very easy to use, and is very fast, finish muxing a 3GB mkv file in less than a minutes.
Just add in the mkv file, together with any relevant .srt file to the "Input files"
After that, the important part, select the .srt file, then select the language for the .srt file.
If you do not specify the language of the .srt file, the player will not recognize the language, thus will not decode the file accordingly to the language Unicode.
In my case, the player won't decode the chinese unicode character, unless I specify "chinese" as the language name.
Then, remember to rename the output file, so that the output file do not overwrite the original file.
Finally, click "Start muxing" button, the muxing process started, and will finish muxing in a few second.
I have tested with the player, and it work very well.
I'm using Serviio as my media server in my Windows XP PC. Serviio do have the subtitle burned-in feature to force the .srt being stream thru DLNA with transcoding method. This method doesn't help much as it won't decode properly with the Unicode. However, it just work fine on english subtitle.
PS:Ok, it is not the language name that matter, but the proper subtitle charset that need to be selected correctly. These can be set at "Format Specific Option" tabLast edited by AlanYee; 06-02-2013 at 07:18 PM.

Have play around with mkvmerge GUI v2.9.5 software.
The software is compatible with MP4 as well, as long as the video format is AVC (Advance Video Coding) or H264 compliance.
The software will demux the video from any container with AVC video format, and mux into a new MKV container.
I have muxed up to 3 different SRT to a MKV, and it works.
Played well on my HTS3562/98 via Serviio DLNA server.
Well, this is still a shame for Philips product where this is a known issue and Philips just ignore it anyway. The player don't even display correct charset for Asian language, although there is a "Charset" selection, the feature is inaccessible, even the feature is mentioned in the user manual. They just ignore all the issue regarding the external subtitle.
However, the subtitle is properly displayed if the subtitle is embedded into the MKV container. The correct charset is auto selected, and you can switch the subtitle language.Last edited by AlanYee; 06-12-2013 at 05:43 PM.

I want hazzle-free subtitles over DLNA too!
For now I use PS3 media server with a Philips BDP player, which works with both .srt and .sub/idx subs.
However, I cannot rewind or fast forward the files. So it's not a perfect solution...
