USB-recording: My TV formatted HDD is not recognised in Windows. How to re-format?

Once an external HDD (hard disk drive) has been formatted by the TV, it is not recognised in MS Windows anymore.
Below an explanation on how to re-format it for use in MS Windows.

!!!BE AWARE THAT ALL DATA ON THE HDD WILL BE ERASED!!!

1. Click on "Start",
2. Right click on "My Computer",
3. Click on "Manage",



4. In the resulting window, click on "Disk Management" (in left hand pane).
You now will see something similar to this:



5. You will see the unformatted disc (disc without Volume name).
In the upper screen part, you'll see all connected drives, while in the lower screen part you'll see a graphical view.
6. In this graphical view, right click on the drive you like to format:
7. Select "Delete Partition" (or "Delete Volume" depending on your MS Windows version).
8. After deletion, right click again on the drive, and select "New Partition" (or "New Volume").
Follow the screen pop-up’s to create a new volume.

!!!!!!BE SURE THAT YOU SELECT THE RIGHT DISK, otherwise the HDD of your PC will be erased!!!!!!

I have a 42PFL7606K02 here with firmware 000.014.084.000 here.
I appended a 2,5" harddisk to the usb port and tried to record a film with it. The TV claimed that the harddisk has to be formatted, I did so and everything worked well. But the harddisk is not readable by a PC. So I formated the harddisk as described above. It was formated in NTFS (there was no other choice on my Win XP). Be aware that formatting will last very long if you do full formatting (like me).
I reconnected the harddisk to the TV. It was recognized and the TV tried to show me the films on the harddisk - of course the harddisk was empty and no film on it. Now I tried to record a film. No chance, the TV claims that there is no harddisk - but I am able to format it.
What can I do?

Hi,

the TV formats the HDD with EXT3 - this file format you cannot read on the PC.

Recordings are "bundled" to the TV - you cannot edit or copy them to the PC...

This means, that the articel above describes how to use a harddisk that I formatted on the TV on a PC and never more on the TV.

What is the reason for this restriction?

What happens with my recordings when my TV is defective and has to be replaced?
How do I play my recordings at a friends' place, or in another room at home, or on my iPad?
How do I crop the recordings (at the beginning / end) or remove previews and ads?
How do I copy the recordings to a different harddisk when the first one is full?

The USB disk is formated in the EXT3 format, readable from linux (or any other EXT3 capable USB reader). Looking at the recordings, they are stored in a not recognized .tsl format. Anyone know if it is possible to back up this format, possibly convert it?

Hi,

they are encrypted and bundled with the TV. So - no possibilties to backup or edit the files.
