I never had any issues regarding black levels. I bought my 46" 9705 on mid-September 2010 (I was the first 46" 9705 own in Greece), and despite reading various rumors on the forums (about newer panels & board replacements), I was never tempted to send my TV to the service.
Regarding black levels, I had measured (with a special instrument called ColourMunki from Spectracal) the black level on an image provided by a plasma fan, and measured these:

Of course I would like better blacks near black objects, but the blacks are satisfactory, and what I expected from a direct local dimming TV with 224 zones.

How do I go about downgrading. Is it the same method as upgrading?
Thanks.

Thank you. Can it be installed (.25) through the menu of the TV, as I have it up now as auto_root. Or shall I do it the way you have suggested.
Thanks.

Hi,
generally, firmware downgrad should work if one remains in the same software branch (e.g. 140.x). However, the standby software need to be in line... as Philips wrote here: http://www.supportforum.philips.com/...ull=1#post7906

I am unable to do that, but the blacks are more inky in 0.25, detail in shadow/darker areas has improved, which to me was a problem. I am still trying out different titles, as I only use the set to watch Blu-rays. I am actually using your settings from the AVS forum!

Dear Ali,
I have used almost all firmwares in my 9705, and I don't remember any particular firmware as having "excellent" image quality. I have noticed some changes in it, i.e. introducing the more global effect in the picture when intense local changes happen. This may cause some trouble with subtiles in some cases, but it has decreased "undecidability" of zones, an extreme affect of which was the "Christmas lights".
I have never had a problem with black levels, and I don't remember any firmware for its "good" image, except 140.40, for its noisy DVB-T (along with some early firmwares, maybe including 0.25).
So, there is no point in me trying to go back - I won't see any "better" image quality or better blacks.
But I would like people that report these kind of things, i.e. that 0.25 has a much better picture quality than 140.44, 140.45 & 140.46, to also post some images, so we can also see the improvement.
If there is an improvement, it will be easy to capture it on camera...
This way I might understand what you are discussing about. Right now I am not sure I understand what you consider as improvement...
What is the motivation for Philips to make the picture quality worse with recent firmware updates?
TVs playing at customer houses is really their most effective advertisement. Why to make them look bad?
I think uploading images, is a way to document things. I think an image from a clip like this one:

from a few firmwares, would be perfect.
