32pfl4606 vga resolution issue and video settings
Hi,
I just bought the tv in subject and i'm quite happy with its features and image quality, moving from an older samsung model. I have 2 questions though, because the included user manual is very short and does not cover these:
1. VGA resolution of TV is always 1920x1080, even if the PC sets it to a lower value (e.g 1024x768). This does not happen when using HDMI connection for the PC (Ok). Why is that? Is there a solution for it?
2. Image preset modes (Cinema, Natural, Standard etc.) all have certain settings. from which I noticed the HD Natural Motion setting to be different (Off in Cinema, Natural, On in Standard etc.). Can you share a document with the settings for each preset. Can they be changed by the user according to its own preferences and saved for future use? Can new presets be created?
Some shortcuts would be nice for the common changed features, like:
- HD Natural Motion toggling Off/minimum/maximum instead of the red remote button's current function of demos (which is totally useless once you buy the TV, I'm sure you agree).....maybe the function to be according with the TV location setting shop/home?!
- some shortcut to switch the channel audio setting from mono to stereo and viceversa
- some shortcut to enable/disable audio surround
....all of these are currently hard to reach, one needs to go to settings->picture/sound->....
the blue remote button is currently not a shortcut to any function, not like the red, green and yellow buttons, so there is place to add user friendly remote functionality. also, the direction buttons have no function on TV watch mode, while they could be easily (and effectively) bind to channel +/- and volume +/- which are harder to reach on the remote.
Can someone from Philips Support Team provide some answers for the above questions/requests?
Thank you beforehand.
BTW, I'm using the latest fw 2.18.Last edited by panamea; 01-27-2012 at 06:05 AM. Reason: additional comment and request

hey Philips Support Team, no feedback from you yet. Could you at least address the "locked" vga resolution issue presented above?

Hi Panamea,
See reply below from development:
1. As TV display technology is matrix display, the native resolution cannot be changed, so if customer buys an FHD product, the native resolution will be default to 1920x1080.
2. There is still picture size change available under VGA mode, user can use the ”Format” function to vary the display size that user feel most comfortable. But the best resolution is “unscale” mode, all the other modes might introduce certain artifacts..
Yor ideas about the shortcuts are also forwarded to development, maybe they can be introduced in later upgrades or products.
Regards,
JuAn

Hi Juan,
Thank you for the update.
Unfortunately, dev's answer does not cope with the fact that HDMI connection with PC does not suffer from this issue(bug). So in other words, on HDMI connection the PC successfully decides the resolution and the TV's status displayed resolution is synchronized with the PC resolution (of course, the image fills the TV's display).
So it looks like the VGA connection of the TV does not support the resolutions advertised by the manual (and that HDMI supports). Of course, I already tried what devs sugested (format display), the image from a smaller resolution than FHD is always smaller than the TV display size.
Please let development know about this, however you read it the VGA connection has a resolution BUG (which I hope is a software one).
Regards,
Mike

Hi,
you can download the following tool to read the HDMI EDID information. Then you can see the supported resolutions on your TV and post them (http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm)
EDID = Extended Display Identification Data: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extend...ification_data

Hi,
be sure you have the latest graphics card driver installed. You should be able to setup the following resolutions via HDMI (PC output):
1920 x 1080
1280 x 720
720 x 576
720 x 480
720 x 576
640 x 480

Hi,
ah - ok. You only have problems with the VGA connection. Try the following resolutions:
Standard timings supported
640 x 480p at 60Hz - IBM VGA
800 x 600p at 60Hz - VESA
1024 x 768p at 60Hz - VESA
1280 x 1024p at 60Hz - VESA STD
and
1360x768p at 60Hz (16:9)
Did you read the EDID information while connected via HDMI or with VGA?

Hi Toengel,
Tried from 800x600 above, all behave in the same (bad) way (on VGA connection).
The tool info was taken from HDMI connection only. I will take from VGA connection too.

Additional feedback from development:
The VGA input only supports auto-zoom (Format features), no change on aspect ratio.
Aspect ratio has to be changed at PC side, it either 4:3 or 16:9 format.
To have full view and to have automatic filing on the wide screen, change the aspect ratio to 16:9 at PC side and set the TV format to auto-zoom.
16:9 aspect ratio
(1280 x 720)
(1360 x 768)
(1440 x 900)
(1920 x 1080)
In HDMI source, if user selects the PC mode ON, the behavior is as above.

Hi,
Taking this latest feedback I tested again, decided to move to another PC with ATI based video, and the problem I noticed before is not there anymore.
So I have to admit that the initial issue is not a TV issue, instead the guilt for weird behavior (TV always displaying 1920x1080) belongs to the nvidia card/driver/os support or maybe cable used. I'll find the actual issue in my PC setup.
Thank you for your support and clarification, this thread can be closed!
Regards,
Mike
