32pfl4606 fw 2.18 total freeze during motion jpeg playback
hi,
the video file was created with a Fujifilm FinePix photocamera and has the following format:
motion jpeg (avi) 720p (1280 x 720) monoaural sound.
the TV in subject freezes after few seconds of playback with sound and no longer responds to remote or even panel buttons (frozen movie image remains on screen). the only way out of this is to unplug&plug in the TV's power cord.
i think this is a show stopper bug that requires immediate action from your side.
thank you,
Mike
PS: i can provide you such video sample if needed.

hey Philips Support Team, no answer on this show stopper bug? do firmware engineering know/work about/on it?

I am sorry to disappoint you Panamea, but Philips is not very responsive on this forum.
In general they come up with answers like "upgrade to the latest firmware"
There is NO information about when new releases come out or what problems is being worked on.
There are a lot of people complaining on this site for sound problems already for more than a year...
There are requests for improvement of the mediaplayer for more than a year, but still no improvements...
Kind regards,
Niels

well, that is too bad...
users should know better their rights because not only the hardware is under warranty policy and laws, but the software too...so i advise any user who finds a real bug to also submit it under warranty to Philips to get it fixed.

Hi,
Since the upload size is limited to <5MB on this forum, you can find the zip archived file at the following link:
http://www.2shared.com/file/cjDeQzyA/DSCF0598.html
After you download it, kindly let me know so I can remove it from that location.

Mike

Panamea,
I think it's quite obvious what's going on here with your file.
Let's summarize all the details first:
(1) the file you're using has an nominal overall bitrate of 29.2mbps (that's including audio), which is very close to the edge of the TV's decoder specification (see your manual for details - max bitrate supported is 30mbps)
(2) it's very likely that the video track is VBR-encoded (variable bitrate); therefore, the nominal value given in the MediaInfo log is not representative at all since it may differ quite a bit
(3) due to #2 we might encounter situations where the overall bitrate dynamically exceeds 30mbps due to the VBR video track
(4) the TV set always freezes at the very same position during playback - this is where the bitrate will exceed the specification
Thus, I assume that the file is inappropriate for playback on this TV set. Secondly, if all that is true, I also assume that the TV set is working well within its specifications.
Did you try lowering the video resolution, which should result in a lowered bitrate as well? If everything's running fine then... well, then my assumptions were perfectly true.

not supported format/bit rate should not lead to a frozen product in any circumstances. even if the user is aware a certain file type is such a problem, a slide show could easily throw the device unusable and this would totally be out of user hands...
firmware engineering must take this into account when designing the software, at least perform a reset of the device when such a hang occurs...

Dear Mike,
Although everything on this thread has been with the best intention of helping out. I think the problem is really that this video file you create is absolutely not supported by the TV:
For avi container the specs supported:
Video codec: MPEG4 part 2 SP /ASP ........ NOT M-JPEG
Resolution: 640x480 or 720x576
In this thread you can see all the supported codecs for Philips TV/HCS and BDP.
Regards,

i am not 100% sure that the file is not supported, since the playback starts with sound and image...i would incline that the high bit rate is a problem for the playback.
but the issue i was complaining is not the missing playback, but the freezing of the TV. this is something i find unacceptable for the common user who just throws in a stick, starts a slide show and finds the TV unusable at a certain point.
thanks for trying to help out as an experienced user, but i am looking for firmware engineering to release more robust software.

On this I agree completely!
Messages such as "File cannot be read or found" are meaningless for the average user. And worst, like in your case, if the TV hangs-up or blocks or reboots because of file incompatibility. This should be avoided in benefit of user experience.
Regards.
