    unable to play mpg video

I just got a new TV, 46SPL5706. I have not been able to view any video so far :-( I find the video, but can't play it. So first thing I found was that mpg4 was not supported... disappointing! Is that something that will be added anytime soon? The file format was an AVI. OK, so I found a free converter and converted to MPG1 as well as MPG2. Still no luck... what gives?

    An example is

    Code:
    General
    Format : MPEG-PS

Is there something incompatible here? Does anyone know of a free converter tool that works?

A related question. What PC folders exactly are actually accessible via the interface? Should be obvious but it's not.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Best regards,
    Rich

Well, I did that, and let's just say it was a total waste of time. That's being kind. I was hoping someone here could help. I have converted an avi to mpg1 and when attempting to open from a USB drive I get 'file not supported'. Mediainfo from what I can see tells me it should be compatible. What am I missing? I figured USB was the simplest to try to eliminate any network issues.

When trying to open the same file from a PC on the network I get a error network error - playback error -NE[00204607]

I'm looking for conversion software or handbrake settings or SOMETHING that'll let me convert an avi (mpg4 codec) file.

Or perhaps someone can point me to a properly encoded public mpg file that is known to play.

Is there any place one can look up what formats exactly are supported? There must be more than what's in the manual. Unfortunately, the level of understanding of Philips customer phone support is exactly the manual - I guess they can read, and re good at using the broken record routine. "If it says playback problem it means there's a problem with paying back". Gee with... But that's not what I want to write.

I finally did manage to play a video after another conversion attempt. I forced it to 720x480. This is not the proper aspect ratio, the original avi is 720x304. Strange format... is this why it would not play before?

    This is the original file

So are there only certain aspect ratios the TV can process? Or is something else causing the issue?

Secondly, when I play the file from USB, I can use controls like pause or fast forward. When I play from a PC on the network non of the controls work. Is this generally so, or is there a problem with something on my network? My network is not overloaded, and I get transfer speeds of 30 Mbps from my desktop to my laptop placed next to the TV (wireless connection to the same access point)

So far I am VERY disappointed with this TV, but it's my first 'modern' TV so I don't have a base for comparison.

    Hi Rich,
Your problem is well known. I really, really love my 40PFL9705H (from the 9000 series), but I also have similar problems.
Do you have installed the latest firmware for you tv? I updated it last week and now I can use the controls (pause, fast forward etc.)
I also converted an AVI file into mpeg1, but it does not work very good. I can watch the movie, and there is sound. But it stutters and audio and video are not synchronized.
I am still working on it and expect that everything will work.

Yes, I installed the latest firmware, all the problems I am having are with the new firmware. That was the first thing I tried when things didn't work well. For your conversion... what tool did you use? I used avitompeg from www.avitompeg.net, a free converter. Handbrake only does mpg4 so no good for this. For me controls work on playback from USB but not from PC. Yours work for PC playback?

For the conversion I use Super from eRightSoft. The program offers many opportunities for different output formats. Now I have tried MOV, but unfortunately that offered no solace.
And yes the remote works fine on the files from the network since my last update.
I also use a NAS driver, the Qnap 410. Thereon are the files that I use for TV playback

I wonder if the European version is the same as the US version. You may have different firmware - and even different hardware. I inquired about an android app that's available in Europe a few weeks ago and was told it would never be available in the US since the hardware used for US models is different. That may only affect remote operation - don't know. The firmware I use is PHL-0AB_318_0 released March 11

It took some searching, but ultimately succeeded anyway. With DVDVideoSoft I have some files converted into NTSC DVD format.
The quality I can not say much about because it is old music files. But it all seems okay.

I am curious whether you will succeed with this format.

Which converter specifically did you install/use? The website has lots of converters. I think behind the front interface they are all the same, and I have had bad experience with free converters, finding them very intrusive and obnoxious so I don't want to install the 47-program superpack. But if that's what you used I'll try it I guess :-) I just think it may be the aspect ratio that the program has a problem with - it is 2.35:1. Maybe I should look for a TV recording instead of a blueray movie to convert so as to have a more 'normal' aspect ratio.
