    Disappointment with Philips Android Device

The Philips T7+ Tablet running Android 4 (Product Number PI3800) has been announced for distribution wordwide and first release in China. So I bought one in Shanghai, packed in a box with English wording and supplied with 'n Quick Start Guide in English. The Android 4 system interface could be set to English. It is clearly a genuine product, sold by a dealer in Philips devices. So nothing, no warning of any kind, prepared me for the disappointment to follow. On starting the Tablet, it turned out that one could only download Apps from a Chinese HiMarket site, most of the Aps being in Chinese and none of the standard business Aps (such as xWriter, Skype etc) available in English. Worse, it proved impossible to download Android Market or Google Play, or any of the Android Aps available there, on the PI380. I sought help at the Philips Support Site but they could only advise that I turn to local Chinese support facilities. I contacted the Philips Service Centre in Shanghai where I was told that this Tablet is unable to download from Google Play and cannot be tweaked to do so. I have thus managed to buy a Philips Tablet of literally no use to me, because I'm not familiar with Chinese. I feel cheated, if I may be frank. Is there any way I could make this Philips product deliver its promise stated on the package materials and the documentation in the box? Please note that I am not the only English speaking Westerner in Shanghai, there are 100,000's more such potential customers.

Unfortunately none of the 65 odd people who have viewed my posting (up to now) seem to know how to make the new Philips T7+ Android 4 Tablet download English apps from Google Play. So let me continue this saga myself. After being told by the Philips Service Center in Shanghai that the product has been limited to Chinese-language customers making use of the China version of HiMarket -- although the English packaging and documentation of the T7+ would make you believe otherwise -- I turned to the black servicing market. In China you find many IT specialists, working the streets, who can crack machines and programs designed to daunt even the brightest boys at Microsoft. One of my friends from this IT underworld in Shanghai is now "leaking" the Apps I need to the T7+, although I must still see what he actually accomplished. Perhaps he has found a workaround for a machine which has apparently been set up to leave English speaking Philips customers in the cold when they buy in China. There is a certain grim satisfaction to working under the hood of a computer. I don't necessary want a trouble-free iPad. Perhaps I'll be happy with this Philips after all.

    Hi ecbritz,

I would like to give you some more information here:
Google Play and related apps are not officially allowed in China by Google. That's why you can only find Hi-market and its related apps available for download.

Apologies for inconvienience caused to you.

    Kind regards,
