subtitles with 2 lines cut off in wide screen mode
When I play DVDs in wide-screen mode, and the subtitles consist of 2 lines, the second line is cut off.
For all other modes the 2nd line ist visible, but the image is distorted (people look thicker than they are !)
In the menu I find the following options to scale the TV-screen:
auto format
movie expand 16:9
wide screen
ok for the image, but I loose the 2nd line of
the subtitles
unscaled
This is really tragic, I hope somebody can help me.
The TV is 32PFL9604H/12
The software ist the latest one: Q5492 0.26.74.0
22.04.2012: I have installed the latest firmware Q5492-0.26.78.0 but the problem persistsLast edited by corlouer; 04-22-2012 at 09:39 PM. Reason: formatting

thanks for your answer: I have installed the firmware you have indicated, but the problem persists. I have attached a PDF with an example for autoformat and for movie expand 16:9
to the original post. Any other idea what I could do ?

Hi,
well - you need a player with subtitle shift.
Internally, the TV receives the movie with black bars (the DVD player only have the movie with black bars and consequently the player also uses the black bar to display the subtitles). The movie expand functionality is working on the stream with black bars. The TV cannot say to the dvd player "hey, move your subtitles a litte bit, I'm cutting black bars"... So, you need a DVD player with subtitle shift.

Hi Alex,
on checking the preferences of the DVD-player (before your post I didn't even know there are) I found a satisfactory solution: I use the format "pillar-box" on the player, and "Auto" on the TV.
Pillarboxing places black bars on the sides of the screen and is used to display standard sized format on widescreens. This way I don't use the whole screen of the TV, but the proportions are ok and the subtitles appear. Thanks for your help, Gerhard

I own a 46pfl9706 set. When playing via USB, subtitles appear in a black frame and in two lines. I would expect such an expensive set to be able to play subtitles correctly i.e. subtitles frame is transparent - just the subtitle wording appears on the screen with no interference to the played screen and it's placed in single line if the subtitle content length allows it.
Why philips aren't testing properly such features, it's obvious to expect a proffesional vendor to do that and to provide correctly working feature.
When can I expect such a fix to be available?
