I ripped my tv shows to MKV and they don't play.
I decided to rip my tv show dvds and have available on a DLNA server and then I bought the BDP 5200/12 and thought I would be able to play all my ripped files. I chose to rip it in MKV so I could have subtitle and multiple audio tracks. It plays for half a second and then stops.
here is some kind of a transcript from mediainfo
is there something that I missed? Is there some obvious reason the blu-ray player doesn't play these files?Code:General Unique ID : 222156039453699648001167061360030526640 (0xA721B26623E1DBC3BD863A400BB42CB0) Complete name : F:\TV Shows\Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law\Season 1\S01E01 - Bannon Custody Case.mkv Format : Matroska Format version : Version 2 File size : 170 MiB Duration : 11mn 57s Overall bit rate : 1 992 Kbps Movie name : Bannon Custody Case Encoded date : UTC 2012-04-27 04:36:58 Writing application : mkvmerge v5.5.0 ('Healer') built on Apr 6 2012 21:43:24 Writing library : libebml v1.2.3 + libmatroska v1.3.0 Video ID : 1 Format : AVC Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec Format profile : Main@L3.0 Format settings, CABAC : Yes Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames Muxing mode : Header stripping Codec ID : V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC Duration : 11mn 57s Bit rate : 1 800 Kbps Width : 710 pixels Height : 480 pixels Display aspect ratio : 4:3 Frame rate mode : Variable / Variable Frame rate : 26.865 fps Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.197 Stream size : 151 MiB (88%) Title : Bannon Custody Case Writing library : x264 core 120 Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=1 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x1:0x111 / me=hex / subme=2 / psy=1 / psy_rd=1.00:0.00 / mixed_ref=0 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=0 / 8x8dct=0 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=1 / chroma_qp_offset=0 / threads=6 / sliced_threads=0 / nr=0 / decimate=1 / interlaced=0 / bluray_compat=0 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=3 / b_pyramid=2 / b_adapt=1 / b_bias=0 / direct=1 / weightb=1 / open_gop=0 / weightp=1 / keyint=300 / keyint_min=30 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=10 / rc=2pass / mbtree=1 / bitrate=1800 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=3 / qpmax=69 / qpstep=4 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:1.00 Language : English Default : Yes Forced : No Color primaries : BT.601-6 525, BT.1358 525, BT.1700 NTSC, SMPTE 170M Transfer characteristics : BT.709-5, BT.1361 Matrix coefficients : BT.601-6 525, BT.1358 525, BT.1700 NTSC, SMPTE 170M Audio ID : 2 Format : AC-3 Format/Info : Audio Coding 3 Mode extension : CM (complete main) Format settings, Endianness : Big Muxing mode : Header stripping Codec ID : A_AC3 Duration : 11mn 57s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 192 Kbps Channel(s) : 2 channels Channel positions : Front: L R Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Bit depth : 16 bits Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 16.4 MiB (10%) Title : Dolby Digital 2.0 Language : English Default : Yes Forced : No Text ID : 3 Format : UTF-8 Codec ID : S_TEXT/UTF8 Codec ID/Info : UTF-8 Plain Text Title : English Language : English Default : No Forced : No

Hi,
is your player updated to the latest firmware (see support webpage). Does the MKV work, if you play it via USB connected HDD?

I just updated to the latest firmware, no change in playability. It does not play from USB or DLNA. None of the shows / movies I ripped recently (using Handbrake) to MKV work.
I just thought MKV is the most decent container, since it can house much more than AVI and M4V, this way I can just keep storing my DVD's in boxes and just have the ripped version on the DLNA server.
Is there maybe something simple I can fix with MKVmerge? hopefully I don't have to re-rip all this stuff.
Sincerely,
Hallur Orn

Hi,
I don't know - but the framerate is VERY strange... Maybe, the BDP cannot cope with variable framerates. Try a file with fixed framerate.

I do have another file that is 25 frames that doesn't work either. Maybe the framerate is funky because I used detelecine on it when ripping, it seemed to help get rid of some of those overly interlaced frames.

You sir are a genius! Thank you! I DO have to re-rip all my Harvey Birdman collection, but at least I know what the problem is...I never thought to look at the framerate setting in Handbrake. I set it to constant and re-ripped one episode, works like a charm now.

Noticed this myself too.
If framerate is variable BDP5200 wont play it
Either mp4 or mkv.
Too bad since i have ripped pretty much hundreds of video files with that setting.
There is no real reason (hardware/software) why variable framerate could not be played.
Just a piece of code in firmware which the player interprets "not supported format"
I concider this as a bug and hoping it will be corrected.

Not sure, this is pretty standard, no?
Read through Samsung's spec table- they have almost the same requirement for frame rate.
