A Bug with .mp4 and subtitles (.srt/.sub)

Playing an .mp4 with external subs like .srt or .sub gives flashing subs (subtitle appear, disapper, re-appear)
Subs work fine for .avi:s and .mkv:s

It all starts with the loading screen:

Immediately when i see that, i know the subs arent going to work/auto loaded.
(for .avis and .mkvs the subtitle is auto loaded.)

It does not matter whether you playback using usb device or disc.

It is very irritating.

Please fix.

Also noticed that .avi:s have auto resume function but not for .mp4 or .mkv.

Device is BDP5200/12 and tested with firmwares 1.16 to 1.52.

Nice piece of hardware, too bad about all the software problems.

Tested dozens of files.
Here is the latest results and things ive noticed.

Every time the loading screen (the three balls) goes from side to side more than 2 times the subs arent going to work.
For the not properly working videos the loading balls go from side to side about 7-10 times (no idea why loading those files take longer)

Seems to be .mp4 + .sub problem (when the file loads fast everything works, if file loads slowly the .sub is flashing)

.mp4 never auto loads subtitle file

The two working files above are made with an universal convertor which produces very poor quality so i really dont want to use it, unless for the last resort.



For this video .srt sub did work ok but not the .sub. Took a while to load the video.
(i included subtitle to the .mp4 container aswell, but it didnt show up at all. Maybe .mp4 containers cannot handle inbedded subs or its another bug)

Tests are done with FW 1.52

for .avi and .mkv files both .srt and .sub work fine and the video file is loaded very fast:

Also just noticed that font styling does not work. <i>Tags like these.</i> are just plain text.
If the subtitle is included inside .mkv container the styles do work. But not for external subs like .srt or .sub.

Ok so it seems .srt is also suffering this flashing.
Its not as bad as with .sub so i did not saw it immediately.

Thanks for sending over files for testing and videos to understand the issue you are now experiencing.

We have tested your files and we wonder if you have the same testing results like ours:
From the package of files you sent, the orginal file works fine with .sub and .srt file. However, the subtitle blinks issue was seen in all other re-encoded files. We suspect that is because of the .sub file and we are now checking on that. The workaround we can think of is to use the .srt file for the moment.

We will let you know more if we have more investigation results. Meanwhile, if you have any input that you think you can provide, please send forth to us by PM or by posting in this thread.

Thank you for taking time with this.
The youtube video clip in the first post is made with the original video file + the .sub i provided.
The blink issue is clearly visible. The combo original+sub is blinking for me.

If i use .srt subtitle it is much better, the blinking only happens every now and then.
If i convert the video file to anything else than .mp4, like .avi for example there are no problems.
The same .sub and .srt works fine.

Maybe you just checked the original+srt if you didnt see the blink?
Like i said .srt:s work much better but still occasionally blink.

For a workaround i have been converting .mp4:s to .avis for now, but it takes time with slow comp :/

Also this problem is with every .mp4:s and .sub:s i have tried.
The file(s) i sent to you is just one example.

Same subtitle file works just great with .avi or .mkv.

Yes, this is what I have feedback to the development team also - this is just an example.
It is tested by 2 different colleagues on 2 different BDP5200 that the original file is working. I will check with them again to see if they were using .srt or .sub.

One time i tested the file i got surprised "wohoo it works" but then i realized i was using the .srt which works better.
Hitting the subtitle button first loads .srt and .sub comes second.

I only put the srt file in the "original" folder. Which might explain why some people thinks the "original" file is working properly if accidentaly checking the .srt only (which works better but still blinks sometimes).

Would be strange if any of the files i sent are working ok with your colleagues since every of those files are suffering from this problem.
They blink excatly on the same time with every file.

But deffinitely good news is that the file worked ok when you tested it with the different BDP models. So it can be fixed with software fine tuning

We are sorry to tell you that though we are able to reproduce with your issue, this is by system limitation that our platform only supports .sub with DivX/MKV files.

Too bad but at least we know this now.

Do you know any other philips BDP model(s) which would work ok?

I might want to upgrade my BDP.

We will check with our platform team, as it is a platform limitation almost all of our BDP/HTS will have this issue. We will also see if there's any workaround. Will update you on this.
