[Question] What contrast ratio do the active 3D (3D Max) glasses have?
Hi,
@Philips
I hope you can enlighten us about a technical question. Some of us plan to buy new active 3D glasses. To have a better overview about the differences of the 3D glasses from the last 3 years (and to have a better decision basis), I'd like to know the contrast ratios:
- PTA03 (2010 glasses): contrast ratio = ?
- PTA516 (2011 glasses): contrast ratio = ?
- PTA507 (2012 glasses): contrast ratio = 2000:1
- PTA517 (2012 glasses): contrast ratio = 4000:1
Can you please help us to complete the list for the PTA516 and PTA03?
Thanks in advance,
Toengel@Alex

Does a higher contrast ratio mean a better 3D experience? Also: are even the cheaper PTA507 glasses from this year better than the more expensive PTA516 from last year?

Hi Bluevoice.
Sorry for the delay in answer.
The higher contrast will ensure a clearer, shaper image so it is a factor (but by no means the only factor as the TV’s backlight plays a key part here). Like when watching a 2D image, the higher the contrast, the more shades of black you will see. Would expect the better contrast to be most visible on the higher end sets (esp the 7000+ series).
PTA516 vs PTA517 = pic quality looks the same, just some improvements made to the design. Yes, they are cheaper this year but technology prices come down every year.
PTA516 is discontinued, so very unlikely to find them in the shops.

Hi Benedickte and thanks for your fast reply. Just 2 more questions:
My initial question was about PTA516 vs. PTA507 because PTA507 also seems to have a better contrast than the PTA516. Did you also mean PTA507 in your writing above? Is it that picture on PTA516 looks more or less the same as on a PTA507 or a PTA517? I understand that technology gets cheeper every year
I have a Philips Cinema Platinum (58PFL9956H/12) and a couple of PTA516 glasses. I'm planning on buying a new PTA517. Could you tell me if it will make any difference or, as you said above, pic quality looks the same?

Hi,
and one additional question:
Do the PTA507 also support the increased shutter speed of 72/75Hz of the upcoming 9000 series?

Dear bluevoice,
Indeed the PTA517 do have a higher contrast ratio. So the 3D Experience should increase on a technical level.
What I can’t tell you is if you do experience that by yourself. As you know there are a lot of things influencing the experience level for 3D.
Most of them are outside from our Business like the healthiness of your Eyes, Light in the Room etc.
So I can’ tell you if the 3D experience will increase for you.
When it comes to PTA507 is light-set with a different design.
Have a great weekend!

Hi Philips - Benedickte, I see that Philips is preparing the release of the 3D glasses for next year. Could you tell us what the contrast ratio will be for the PTA508 and the PTA518? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Can u please tell us about the PTA518 ? i just ordered it and i have the 507 which came with 7007.
Will i see any different in games and movies ? the 3D really takes down the contrast and i have the 3D backlight + Contrast to 100

I got the 518 on the the post office i'll go take them tomorrow, by the spec it seem that it weight more 0.35 instead of 0.07 compare to 507, but it should be more comfortable and if the 517 has better contrast ratio then 518 should be the same or higher, the question is same or higher. Can someone answer the question ?
518 support
• Compatible with: PTA215, 32PFL9606, 37PFL9606,
40PFL8505, 40PFL8605, 40PFL8606, 40PFL9605D,
40PFL9606, 40PFL9705, 40PFL9715, 42PFL8605,
46PDL8906, 46PFL8505, 46PFL8605, 46PFL8606,
46PFL8685, 46PFL8686, 46PFL9705, 46PFL9706,
46PFL9715, 52PFL8605, 52PFL9606, 58PFL9955,
58PFL9955D, 58PFL9956, _PFL5507 (Eu),
_PFL7007 (Eu), _PFL8007 (Eu), 46PFL9707,
60PFL9607
So u can use them, I say if u can get the best one just get it cause it u will be using it a lot or at least on long period of time watching movies or playing games. if u really want little cheaper glasses then 517 should work I guess depends if it the same contrast as 518. but don't get 507 cause it has lower contrast quality and 516 is not in production anymore.
Thanks
