37PFL6606H -How to connect sound system (Sony) to TV

I'm trying to connect my Sony surround sound to my TV so I can listen to concerts. The sound system is connected to the DVD recorder with an optical cable, but no optical connector on TV. I've connected the DVD recorder with the TV via Scart but the sound system doesn't work then. The sound system does work playing a DVD so I know its working.
The DVD recorder doesn't have an HDMI port (its a little old). The USB on the TV is taken by a Wifi dongle. What cable do I have to get to connect the DVD (and sound system) to the TV so I can use the sound system for watching TV?
And what settings do i need on the TV to make this work?

Sorry, i'm a user and not very technical....

    Look forward to hearing.
    Thanks

    Hi there Rotjeknor.

I would advise you to use the headphone out from your TV into a 3.5mm jack in on the sound system. You can adjust the sound on this from the menu and if you don't want sound from the TV, all you need to do is mute the volume with the remote control.

    Best regards,

Thanks Benedickte, is headphones the only solution then? What if I have a party? I'd rather connect the surround sound. Today I spend £10 on some audio cables (you know red and white) but still no luck. I set the sound settings on the TV to surround but no, not a whisper out of those speakers. Very disappointed as the DVD recorder and surround sound (bit Xmas present a few years ago) and TV do not seem to connect what so ever.... C**P basically.... sorry

    Hi Rotjeknor.

Even though it's a headphone output doesn't mean you need to use only headphones. Use a 3.5 mm audiocable to connect it with your surround sound system.
