UPNP remote control of WAS700. Recommend a good Android app?

Before I give-up and retire my WACS700 system completely I have been playing with upnp apps for my tablet to try to make it a bit more user-friendly.

    I have played with a few apps; (UPNPlay and Bubble to name 2) and can get it to work basically;
ie I can play tracks held either on the WAC700 or another UPNP server through a WAS700.
The WAS shows up as a UPNP renderer ok but am struggling a bit with 2 things:

    1) Remote Volume control.
The volume level on the control point is not changing the volume on the WAS700. It works on other renderers (eg my Roberts Internet Radio). Big problem is that the player goes into "remote control mode" so you can't change the volume on the player either. Is this just how it is (ie give up)? Or am I just being unlucky with the apps I've cosen to play with so far? If the latter anyone got a better choice?

    2) Playlists.
Now I have a feeling this is a constraint of upnp architecture not the WAS but the playlist looks like it has to live on the control point (tablet) doesn't it? And for that to happen the tablet has to be awake and "in charge" the whole while.
Is there no way of getting the WAS to play its "own" playlist? If not any idea how i'd import the existing playlists and again which app wil work well)?

    3) Actually just had another thought - is it possible to rename the WAS700s as they appear on the network? They both show up on upnp discovery with the same name and I need to remember which IP address is which. Be nice if I could give them useful names.

    Thanks in advance
    Colin

    Hi Colin !

1: The WAS700 does not have remote volume control implemented.

2: I always play playlists residing in the UPnP/DLNA server, but I do not remember whether the WAS700 had some kind of issues with that. I strongly recommend that you try to put a playlist in your server and see what happens when you tell your WAS700 to play it.

3: Nope, they can't be renamed

Another good UPNP/DLNA application out there is Skifta (there are actually quite many to choose from).

    Cheers !

    Tias, thanks for confirmation.
Saves me messing around trying to do something that's not possible.
    That's a huge shame though.
Pretty much scuppers my plans of using UPNP/DNLA to allow us to drive it from a tablet then.
It would be useless without any way to control the volume.

! Philips what the hell were you thinking when you implemented DNLA for this player ?

So now I've got to go and spend stupid money on a Sonos system just to keep the "better half" happy.

    Hi Colin !

AFAIK, the WAS700 is not DLNA certified, it's "just" UPnP certified and if memory continues serving me well, implementing remote Volume Control is not required to get it UPnP certified.
Nevertheless, I fully agree, it's a real pity it's not there.

I moved on to the NP-, MCi- and AW-devices which indeed does support remote control of the volume via UPnP/DLNA in it works quite nice.

    Cheers !
