Greek (and other language) subtitles on Philips TVs

I just bought a 37PFL4007 TV and my decision was based upon its advertised characteristics and abilities.

It was a great surprise to discover that when trying to play an avi file with greek srt subtitles, they were not shown correctly.

After searching the internet I found this to be a well known problem in other series too (and for other languages like Polish, Portuguese, Hebrew etc.) and there were also "official ?" answers from Philips ranging from "this ability will never be given to your series" to the incredible answer "This is a TV and not a Media Player".

My TV has (and advertises) the ability to play files from USB with srt subtitles, the only problem being that it needs another character set to display them correctly. This, as I am almost sure, is just a simple software update which can be easily implemented into a future Philips update (and will cost nothing to the company). Such an improvement will satisfy anyone complaining about this problem, it will keep current customers fully satisfied and justify their selection of a Phillips TV. As we all know the best advertisement of a company is its satisfied customers.

If on the other hand Philips will insist on not providing this ability I would like to know the reason for their decision.

If this is a new "marketing policy" I think that this is a bad policy, not only for the current customers, but mostly for Philips who probably will lose future customers, as most of its competitors offer this ability from the beginning (and in many cases at much lower priced TVs).

Another easy solution to the problem is to use a program to built the subtitles inside the file. A program like that is AVIAddxSubs (as already suggested in another topic). This program needs usually less than 2 minutes to create a new file able to show the subtitles correctly.

Such easy solutions do not justify Philips of not providing this ability inherently to their TV. Waiting for an official answer.

Thank you for your reply, but I have already tried that and it is not possible to select anything there
as the field is greyed out. Probably this solution applies only to 6000 series and not 4000 ?

I still hope that somebody from Philips will clarify the company's intensions, as far as this problem is concerned.

also try to update your TV to the latest firmware if it is not updated already.

this menu did not exist on the 6000 series in the first place and was added on a firmware update.

I have updated to the latest firmware from the first moment (via internet).

So my comments at my 1st post still remain. Is this a new marketing policy, for example in order to sell higher series TVs (and therefore higher priced) ?
How smart is such a policy, while your competitors offer even much lower priced TVs with this feature fully supported (srt support for any possible character set).

How Smart is it for a Smart TV not to support that simple feature ?

In a model either you offer a video player or not.

If you offer the video player with srt subtitle support for some languages, it is not logical (or fair, or smart, or...) not to support at the same time srt subtitles for all the languages that your TV already has translations in all menus.
