Problemlist 8605 TV while watching movies from Media Server or USB

Hello Philips,

Your 8605 LED TV is great but... having serious problems here watching movies using USB or a Media Server!

- Can not rewind or forward when playing a movie
- DVD's served via a Media Server do not start
- Subtitles are not supported (srt files), this is really an issue
- I can not start MKV files
- MP4 needs to be started two times before they run, and I can not pause the movie

Using the latest recent software update version Q5551-0.140.27.0

I've got the same TV model and from my side I can say:

1) "missing ffwd or rewind for movies": it happens to me for the mkv files (not every one but some mkv files. So I was thinking that it could be related to file problems, not the TV. But I could be wrong). For the other formats (.avi for example, it works pretty well)

2) for me too: via MediaServer (PC connected via WLAN) I cant' reproduce the files. Sometimes they start but they're not mantaining the connection. They stop themselves after few seconds

3) subtitles: I've still not tried

4) the MKV files goes pretty well (I've reproduced them using a USB key on the USB port on the TV side)

5) I've not tried MP4 till now.

Depends on the codec you're using. MPEG-I / MPEG-II movies should work fine as this codec is made up with sequencial search in mind. With codecs like MPEG-4 ASP, thing will get trickier as we could encounter dynamic GOP allocation mechanism. Therefore, a TV set could not predict I frames, so sequencial file access is alot more dynamic now. This may prevent FREW / FFWD.

- DVD's served via a Media Server do not start

Real ones, physically inserted into a DVD drive on your PC? If so, it depends on the media server you use. WMP11 can, for example, not serve external drives. Try Twonky, it does the job for me.

- I can not start MKV files

If there are contents not supported natively by the TV's decodre (DTS audio streams), this might be in fact the case. But this should not affect all files (okay, you might have DTS-only files with no exceptions among them). Try checking your filed with MediaInfo in order to see if there are DTS streams located within the file. According to my experience so far, that's the main reason why somthing like this can happen.
